BOLOGNA: Tram, the construction site in via Riva Reno is a reality

The maxi-construction site of the red line of the Bologna tram in via Riva Reno has become reality. This is the first intervention in the center regarding the important infrastructure and will last a total of 16 months. Reduced parking and contributions to traders in the area are the main issues that are already sparking debate in the city

Modified roads, buses diverted, first parking lots removed and a call for at least 100 thousand euros to support commercial activities in the area, for example for initiatives and communication campaigns, which Palazzo D’Accursio would be studying by the summer. The construction site of the red line of the Bologna tram in via Riva Reno, the first in the center for the infrastructure, is now a reality. It will last at least 16 months and will not only result in a revolution in terms of mobility and parking, but will be a real redevelopment of the area. In addition to trees, new cycle and pedestrian paths and green areas, a part of the Reno canal will also be uncovered, with the spaces adjacent to the open-air waterway featuring two pedestrian paths, one to the north and one to the south of the canal, with more meeting points, and a walkway at Via dell’Abbadia, to be able to continue towards the other bank. The area at the back of the Church of Santa Maria della Visitazione will be transformed into a small square with seating, bike racks will be positioned and the tram will travel on a reserved site largely covered with grass. The Riva Reno-Lame intersection, where the works will begin, will remain closed for a period of approximately three months, while the second phase of the maxi construction site is expected not before next autumn, in the western section of via Riva di Reno, between crossroads with via San Felice and the Piazza Azzarita roundabout. Central issues, for those who live or work in the neighborhood, but also for the local political debate, parking (the final balance is -126 parking spaces) and business at risk for commercial activities. The approximately 60 businesses in the area, gathered in committee 40122, have already put forward some of their proposals to the Municipality, such as that of using the preferential roads unused at the moment, given that the buses are diverted due to the construction site, to create around forty parking spaces temporary, keeping the path of dialogue open, with the next appointments with Palazzo D’Accursio already scheduled. Some are equipping themselves with street parties, others with an hour of free garage for customers, but despite the measures put in place by the administration, such as around 70 stalls in the area converted for residents or some agreements with the manager for discounts at the car park in via del Rondone, as well as reductions or exemptions on local taxes and non-repayable contributions, the construction site and its impacts, under the Towers, already see the sides preparing for a very long season of controversy.
