Work on the sea works preparatory to the construction of the “fishing boat dock” in Fiumicino has begun. Arrived from the port of Chioggia last week, the motor-dredge vessel “Cavaliere Sergio M.” it moored in a shipyard in Fiumara Grande and yesterday morning it moved to the canal port. The special vessel has been equipped with the necessary equipment with which to begin the first excavation operations of the “foundation” of the breakwater of the landing place which will be built at the mouth of the Trajan Fossa. The spotlight is therefore on the “experimental module” entrusted to the workers of the companies Doronzo Infrastrutture Srl and Consorzio Stabile Vitruvio Scarl who won the contract announced by the Port System Authority. The semicircular barrier, designed to protect the entrance to the dock, will start from the end of the north pier of the navigable canal and the technicians have identified a stretch of approximately 65 meters long and 55 meters wide for the “basement” interventions. It involves digging a sort of foundation about one meter deep, on an 8 meter seabed, inside which you then cram a layer of stones and from this support base begin to lay larger flakes of flint until reaching the level of the sea. From here the motor vessel will then have to continue the construction of the trapezium by laying another 8 meters of large stones to complete the installation of the stretch of breakwater barrier which at this stage the technicians define as “experimental”. Meanwhile, the construction work continues on the squares in front of the work with the laying of stones, leveled by mechanical means, brought to the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea by road bison. The good news for residents is that the construction site is about to be completed and by May the trucks will no longer pass through arteries such as via Foce Micina. The motor vessel will most likely complete the work on the “experimental module” by the end of June and the start of dredging which will concern the port-canal and the dock is therefore scheduled for July. The debris taken from the riverbed will allow the reclaimed basin to be filled where some structures serving the landing place will be built. The news of the dredging brings smiles back to the owners of the largest fishing fleet in Lazio and especially to those in charge of Semarpo which has two tugboats. It is also appreciated by the skippers of sailing boats moored in the dock who have been asking for excavation for some time as the fiberglass hulls and propellers are subject to violent stress due to the shallow seabed. The fishing dock represents the first step of the commercial port and 43 million euros made available by the European bank will be needed.
