May Day in Florence, the procession from via Mariti to remember the massacre

A May 1st of demonstrations to say no to exploitation and ask for more safety at work. In Florence meet in via Mariti, at 10 am, at the entrance to the construction site where 5 workers died on February 16th. The procession, organized by the Base Trade Union Union, Cobas and numerous other groups, will parade around the construction site area and then end in Piazza Dalmazia, where speeches from the stage are expected.

«Every day is May 1st» is the slogan of the event, whose promoters say: «The daily massacre in the workplace continues and shows no sign of slowing down. The Meloni government has approved a decree which will have no effect and which will serve neither to hit those responsible nor to reverse the trend of accidents and deaths at work. May 1st cannot be enough to have a party but rather a day of struggle and protest focused on the issue of murders at work.” It calls for, among other things, the cancellation of the procurement system, the abolition of the Jobs Act and the introduction of the crime of homicide at work.

Various initiatives also promoted by the CGIL, CISL and UIL unions in Sesto Fiorentino (the procession will start at 10.15 from Piazza Ginori), Empoli (the procession from 9.30 from Via Roma/Piazza Don Minzoni), Pontassieve (meeting at 10 in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in front of the Town Hall), Barberino di Mugello (meeting at 9.30 in Piazza Cavour), Fiesole (departure at 10.15 from the Casa del Popolo in via Vittorio). Other events, promoted by the CGIL, in Fucecchio, Gambassi Terme, Montaione and Florence, with a walk from Borgo dei Greci at 5pm.

«We cannot do without May 1st – they said from CGIL, CISL and UIL – And every year the need to talk about workers and work is increasingly felt. In our streets we want to talk about everyone’s responsibility towards a Europe of peace and social justice: there is no decent work, there cannot be a healthy economy, there cannot be fair rules and spaces for true development, without a lasting peace, capable of overcoming any social, religious barrier and any ideological prejudice”. This is why the theme chosen this year is “Let’s build together a Europe of peace, work and social justice”.

In the meantime, on the green net that delimits the construction site in via Mariti, the names of the five workers who died during the collapse appeared in large letters: Luigi Coclite, Mohamed El Ferhane, Bouzekri Rahimi, Mohamed Toukabri, Taoufik Haidar. Next door, on the sidewalk, there are still many flowers in their memory, now dried.
