The official handover took place today in the office of the President of the Provincial Council, who conferred the presidency on Gögele in the presence of his predecessor Roland Turk. The Prime Minister thanked Turk for what he has done in the 10 years of his activity, and extended his best wishes to the new president for her tasks in these particularly challenging times (from left Judith Gögele and Roland Turk photo credit provincial council Bolzano, Werth).
In addition to managing already familiar fields and topics, the new president will also focus on new challenges: from rapid developments in social media and artificial intelligence to the spread of fake news, disinformation and hate speech online.
“For me, constructive collaboration with all partners is very important, both with the media, journalists, and with those who decide in the provincial government and at state level. It is about supporting the local media panorama and, above all, committing for high quality journalism. Only independent journalists can guarantee balanced information, and it must be in the interest of all of us to work together so that there is no space for fake news and defamatory campaigns. With artificial intelligence and social media, we are exposed to an increasingly confusing flow of information, which makes it difficult to verify the truth: this makes the presence of credible information sources that also conduct in-depth research, as well as wide-ranging media expertise, even more important.”
The Provincial Committee for them communications is an independent guarantee body, made up of six members, which operates in the media sector at a local level. In addition to President Gögele and Vice President Espro, they are part of it Eberhard Daum, Renate Mumelter, Thomas Schnitzer e Gerhard Vanzi. On behalf of the Authority for Guarantees in AGICOM Communicationsit takes on functions of vigilance and control for the protection of users and operators in the sector. At the same time, it works to preserve and improve the quality and pluralism of the media sector in South Tyrol. In particular, the Committee monitors compliance with the so-called “level playing field”, and is the Province’s consultative body for all matters relating to communications.
