Between accelerations and empty passes, the 1932 Latina Calcio season left us constantly in suspense. Poised between I would like but I can’t, between the desire to explore new horizons and the inability to exploit key moments. Entry into the play-offs is a value that should not be underestimated, especially for a club careful not to lose the balance between technical and financial management, without forgetting a whole series of events which certainly did not help the Nerazzurri to reach positions which, for the quality of the squad, they were well within reach. While waiting to understand if the opponent will really be Taranto, the postponement of the start of the play offs is official. On Friday 3 May there will be a discussion at the Coni Guarantee Board of the appeal presented by the Apulians regarding the 4 penalty points inflicted for administrative violations, so the Lega Pro has postponed the start of the promotion pool to Tuesday 7.
THE STREET
We started off strong, perhaps beyond all expectations, with Daniele Di Donato on the bench, but when Latina seemed ready to make a big leap forward, they suffered from dizziness and suddenly lost altitude, leading to the change of technical leadership. The Gaetano Fontana effect gave a shock to the whole environment, allowing the team to climb the rankings, but just when everything suggested a crescendo ending, here was a new involution, culminating with four knockouts in a row which put the team at serious risk to oust the Nerazzurri from the promotion pool. The victories against Avellino, away, on their championship debut and the encore granted at home against Potenza have fueled the self-esteem of a group capable of positioning themselves at the top table in the first fifteen days of the championship. A total of seven successes, four draws and as many defeats. Among the most beautiful victories there is certainly the one obtained at the home of Foggia, a sensational blow that suggested the definitive take-off towards the top rankings and instead from that moment (end of November), the Pontine team began to lose altitude, without finding a way to get it back. And so after a series of seven results without success (including the Italian Cup, with just two draws with Turris and Benevento), the company decided to change drivers, entrusting the technical guidance to Gaetano Fontana.
A first match full of problems, with an intestinal virus knocking out half the squad, but with a success of capital importance. With the three points won at the Francioni against Monterosi, the Nerazzurri in one fell swoop managed to regain their lost path to success and the play-off zone. A promising start, with the draw in Caserta and three consecutive victories with Catania at home, Brindisi and Monopoli away, punctuated by the defeat against Giugliano, a match played with pain in the heart due to the premature death of Maurizio Vona, the defender’s father Edoardo, who returned to the capital a few days ago. The away defeat against Virtus Francavilla and the home defeat against the champions Juve Stabia were overcome thanks to two heavy victories with Crotone away and Foggia at Francioni, thanks to which Latina dreamed of finishing in seventh position, a position which it would have guaranteed a first play-off round with the possibility of playing with two results in favour. With four matches to play, the objective was within reach, but either due to performances below expectations or due to the continuous emergency linked to too many injuries and suspensions, Latina put together a nightmare streak, leaving us twelve very heavy points on the plate. But now a new challenge begins. Very difficult, but at the same time stimulating. A play-off to be played, in all probability, against Taranto, the latest team to give the Pontini a displeasure. Who will thus have the chance to take a good revenge to try to make their way in the intricate path of poule promotion.
