Only one in 5 students thinks that the mafia can be defeat. A high and significant range of youngIn short, he thinks that the mafia phenomenon cannot be extinguished and is stronger than State. This is what emerges from a survey of the “Pio La Torre” Study Center – a non-profit organization in Palermo named after Pio La Torrepolitician victim of mafia whose anniversary is April 30th the anniversary of death – aimed at students of schools second degree throughout Italy. An anti-mafia educational project which this year involved 1578 students from 14 to 21 years old.

Specifically, it’s just the 20.6% of the young people interviewed to respond positively to the question if the mafia can be defeated. 49.8 percent believe, however, that is not possible. Almost one in two. About one in three he also declares that he does not have a precise opinion on the matter. Adding up the students who selected “no” among the response modes and how many, on the contrary, showed up doubtfula figure of almost 80% is reached.

But what should the state do to reverse this perception? Young people ask to fight corruption and cronyism (21.52%) and of educate about legality (21.31%). Central figures are considered the teachersthe most deserving of trust regarding the fight against mafias for 32%. Followed by the police and the judiciary, while national and local politics share the lowest steps of the podium, at 7.44% and 4.74% respectively. Furthermore, 90.66% of those interviewed believe that “people, in general, look at own sake”.

“The questions that young people ask us about how to improve the fight against infiltrations mafia and how to attack corruption and clientelism, cannot remain without clear and convincing answers,” he says Loredana Introini, president of the Center. “From the students – he adds Vito Lo Monacopresident emeritus – there are signals that should not be underestimated compared to the current one social crisis, economic and political which affects not only i democratic systems, but the states of the entire planet, shaken by a rapid process of technological, social, economic and environmental transformations and threatened by local wars that can degenerate into nuclear war”.

And he explains: “The poor participation of citizens to vote in democratic systems, in Italy it does not exceed 50% in the latest elections, it is an indicator of their mistrust towards the leadership and towards the parties transformed from bodies representing the various social strata to restricted ones power groups electoral without a strategic vision of change to eliminate inequalities and social injustices”.
