The Carletti swimming pools they are free natural spas, fed by a thermal spring similar to those of Bullicame and are located near Viterbo. The water flows at 58°C and fills several tanks, which can be used throughout the year. The area is very pleasant, because it is surrounded by a lawn, and has a large parking area, always free, even if unattended.
The Carletti swimming pools
The Carletti swimming pools, which are called puddles by the locals, are just over two km from the center of Viterbo and in the past were used to collect water to irrigate the fields. The thermal water arrives directly in the tubs, with a flow rate between 3 and 10 l/sec at a maximum temperature of 58°C. The heat, which is different from pool to pool, is however constant all year round and consequently swimming pools are a popular destination all year round. It is important to go and bathe equipped, at least with water and a towel because there are no services.
L’hyperthermal water it is fed by two springs located between Strada Bagni and Tuscanese. It is a sulphurous-sulphate-bicarbonate-alkaline-earthy water, rich in mineral salts and trace elements, with beneficial properties for respiratory, gynecological, dermatological infections and joint inflammation. It is very reminiscent of the Bullicame spa.
How to take a bath
The water is really very hot. Obviously the tanks less close to the sources lose a few degrees, but still remain above 45°C. It is advisable to soak for no more than 10 minutes or to alternate the treatment with baths in lukewarm tubs, which reach a maximum of 30° C. The presence of many swimming pools allows you to do the calidaruim – tepidarium – frigidarium route. It is also possible to access the mud tank.
How to reach the Carletti swimming pools
The area can be reached very easily with the Viterbo city buses, which stop near the springs. They are located on the Tuscanese road, in Marinelle, about 1km from the Military Airport. They are near the Baths of the Popes. For those arriving from Rome we recommend taking the A1 motorway towards Florence, exit at Orte and follow the E45 highway towards Viterbo.
