Rome, 29 April 2024 – At the Serravalle Gardens, in Cesena, a celebration with a double meaning was celebrated on 25 April: that of Liberation and that of welcome. An event, the one organized, which embraced the symbolic and the concrete, where the celebration of April 25th was mixed with the desire to give voice to those who, despite being born in Italy and raised here, do not yet have access to Italian citizenship.

Cesena, a celebration for foreign minors

I am 1,689 foreign minors resident in Cesena, of which 1,143 were natives of the city itself. These guys, despite their history linked to Italy, yesThey are still excluded from Italian citizenship, a situation that relegates them to a limbo of uncertainty and legal precariousness. Last April 25, however, they received tangible recognition of their bond with the Cesena community: the honorary citizenship conferred on them by the Municipality of Cesena. A significant gesture, made possible thanks to a civic and educational path carried out during the years of middle school, a cycle of studies that these young people completed with commitment and dedication.

The Municipality’s decision to grant them honorary citizenship it is an act that goes beyond symbolism: it is an invitation to reflect on the need to reform the current law on citizenship, so that full recognition of their rights and belonging is guaranteed to everyone. The councilor for the person and the family, Carmelina Labruzzotogether with numerous other civil commitment organizations in the area, led the initiative “We are Cesenati too”a project that aims to promote authentic integration in the Cesena community, enhancing the experiences and stories of those who were born and raised here.

The party held on April 25th, therefore, was the culmination of a long journey that involved various local associations and institutions. Mayor Enzo Lattuca closed the initiative, together with the music of the multicultural Bandada choir, and a refreshment point with food trucks to share moments of conviviality and solidarity.
