A land to stay. The tour of the French writer Jadd Hilal begins from Tuscany

Pisa on 04/29/2024 – Editorial team

The writer’s Italian tour begins in Pisa, thanks to the support of the University of Pisa and in collaboration with the Oriental Book Club Jadd Hilal who will present his novel “A land to stay” (Astarte Edizioni), translated by Giulia Beatrice Filpi. The event will be held on Thursday 2 May, on the occasion of the official release of the novel, in the garden of the Caffè dei Cavalieri (via Corsica 14) at 6.30 pm. The meeting will be introduced by Prof Barbara Sommovigo of the University of Pisa.

The novel tells the story of four generations of women belonging to the same family, of their exile from the 1930s to the end of the century, from Palestine to the outskirts of Geneva.
As a teenager, Naima is forced to marry a man much older than her, who takes her from Palestine to Lebanon to escape the first Arab-Israeli conflict. Ema, her daughter, enthusiastically experiences the political and cultural ferment of the Seventies in Beirut, but she is crushed between her father’s violence and her husband’s, more subtle, violence. Still a child, Dara is forced to leave her beloved country for Switzerland. She will return to Lebanon as soon as possible, but the Israeli attacks of 2006 will bring her back to Europe. Here Lila grows up, a child of the new millennium, who fights homesickness with the power of her imagination.

The tour will continue with two more stops on 3 and 4 May, respectively in Rome (Griot Bookshop, 6.00 pm) and Naples (Festival Libbra, 7.30 pm).
