(frasan) If Taranto’s appeal were also rejected by the Coni Guarantee Board, Benevento would come into play on Tuesday 14 May, three days after the date previously established by the League. The witch would play away on the pitch of one of the qualifiers from the group stage. The return would be scheduled for Saturday 18 May at Vigorito. If the CONI Board of Guarantee agrees with Taranto, it would be necessary to take into account how many points were returned to them. Just one point would allow them to overtake Casertana who are on 65 and catch Benevento on 66. In that case the Giallorossi would retain third place, Taranto would gain a position by reaching fourth place and would condemn Casertana to the first round of the group stage (fifth against tenth, i.e. Casertana-Latina). If two points were returned to the Apulians, in that case they would not only overtake Casertana, but also Benevento who would finish fourth. Taranto would therefore be third. Benevento would have the second round of the group stage, a single match on Saturday 11 May against the worst team from the previous round.
Extreme case: if CONI returned all four points to the Apulians, they would actually finish in second place on equal points with Avellino, but ahead in head-to-head matches. Therefore Taranto second, Avellino third, Benevento fourth, Casertana fifth.
Frankly, disavowing what the judges of the Federal Court of Appeal ruled seems implausible today. We could not accept such a disparity in judgment between the FIGC judges and those of the CONI: the case of Taranto, moreover, would seem very clear and should not allow for interpretations of any kind. But, after all, we are in Italy. Where everything (but we hope not) is allowed.
