Bari, Emiliano summoned to the Anti-Mafia commission on 2 May

The president of the Puglia region considers the call “inappropriate” for political reasons: “My unavailability is false”

April 29, 2024

The president of the Puglia region Michele Emiliano considers the summoning to the Anti-Mafia commission “inappropriate” for political reasons, but the call still arrives for May 2nd at 10:30. The letter in which the governor explains the reasons for the inappropriateness of the hearing – given the current political situation at regional level – was read this morning to the commission by president Chiara Colosimo.

Emiliano – as far as we know – had received a range of five possible dates to be audited. The first three, as also requested by the Democratic Party, were proposed for next week, but the governor had said he could not participate due to the concomitance of the vote of no confidence. So he was given options for April 30th and on May 2. Last April 24th, in the evening, Emiliano wrote the note citing reasons of political inappropriateness for the days of May 7th, 8th and 9th.

President Colosimo convened a bureau this morning at 9.30 to read the communication and – again according to what we learn – assessed, without going into the merits, that failure to convene would have created a dangerous precedent of avoiding the convocation. Hence the decision then taken to set the meeting for Thursday 2 May.

Emiliano: “My unavailability for the Anti-Mafia hearing is false”

“I read that it refers to my presumed unavailability at the hearing at the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission. The circumstance is false and maliciously represented.” The president of the Puglia Region, Michele Emiliano, says this.

“For this purpose I had fortunately sent a letter to the President of the Anti-Mafia Commission asking her to keep my Anti-Mafia hearing separate from the debate in the Regional Council on the no-confidence vote for avoid the exploitation of the parliamentary investigative act with the activity of the regional council, to avoid media maneuvers that I see are regularly occurring”, he explains. “The Anti-Mafia Commission is a third party, which has the same powers and an investigative function comparable to that of the Judiciary. Not only must it be third, but it must appear as such,” she concludes.
