NOTES BY ELENA BUCCI
I grew up in a country house stuck in a country that was changing quickly, I learned the dialect from gruff and strong women, from men who spoke little and with large hands. They didn’t pass on to me all their heritage of gestures and words, they were almost ashamed of it. They bowed to a new freedom that overshadowed their knowledge. That little dark-haired girl running in the courtyard was destined to study, speak Italian, live like a boy, become a citizen of the world. I escaped and came back, actress, author and director, as I dreamed. Putting my knowledge to the test, I realized how little I knew about my stepmother, who, jealous of my wanderings, grabbed me and would never leave me again. Every corner of the landscape speaks to me, every person is a novel. Trying to reconnect with the past, to rediscover lost knowledge and words, I have learned to love every culture. There is a magical door there that helps me transform the stories of a place into everyone’s story. My stepmother’s terra mater inspired my performances and writings, pushed me to create groups, to perform shows everywhere, to reopen abandoned and forgotten places to the public, from a seventeenth-century palace to a theater, from a small church to a former slaughterhouse. It continues, from near and far, to whisper in my ear its ancient language that transforms my voice and my body, opens and chains my imagination, makes me laugh and cry, the subtle language of the poor and the rich that knows how to name the pink expanse of peach trees in bloom and the color of the sea when the season changes, he knows how to trip up the powerful and tells the truth.
I remain enchanted observing faces and lives, listening to stories, memories, memories. I create a weaving of stories suspended between reality and imagination where the tenacity of famous and unknown people stands out who make their lives a gift, resisting resignation, selfishness and closure. I become them, man and woman, young, old, child, I give my voice to those who have not had one.
As happens in dreams, the fractures between different times and spaces, between the living and the dead, are healed and I can smile even in separation, even in tragedy. Through different shows I relive some of my most cherished themes: the art of theater as a tool for understanding and loving the world around me, the desire to give a voice to those who have none, the dismay at the ferocious conflict between cultures and religions, respect for culture and memory, love for the multifaceted beauty of the planet undermined by a greedy economy and politics to the point of destruction.
I was immersed in this research when the flood of May 2023 arrived. Words, images, news, emotions, entered my fairy tale which seemed created to welcome them.
I seem alone, but I am surrounded by a myriad of ghosts that ask to be told. If I don’t do it, who ever will? We are in an abandoned building, in an old country house, in a Romagna swamp between water and sky, in a big city, inside a dream or a soul, above an enchanted tree or in the poets’ garden. We can meet a ninety-year-old with the soul of a child, a filmmaker whose reality escapes her, a formidable woman storyteller, a farmer who does not want to abandon his house even when the river floods the countryside and resumes its original course. Passed down from voice to voice, a lullaby wards off wars and greed against which she fights by opening her arms to tell everyone’s stories and not lose their memories. It is an impossible undertaking, a declared failure that brings joy. There’s nothing to lose and tons of things to learn.
I want to fantasize about many places and many people that I do not forget in this work partly dedicated to Ivano Marescotti, a friend and great artist who was a wonderful singer of this land, of this language and of its poetry, improving with the passing of time how good wine makes.
