Soroptimist International Elba Island was also present at the regatta which took place in Marina di Campo from 25 to 28 April.
This is the third of three stages of the ‘ILCA Italia Cup 2024’. The first two took place in February and March respectively in Marina di Ragusa and Civitanova Marche. This is one of the most important Ilca class events on Italian territory. In addition to the sporting competition, this year the regattas aim to raise awareness of the sad and now well-known phenomenon of violence against women.
“We are very happy to participate in this sporting event – states the President of Soroptimist Elba Rosella Fascetti – and for this we thank the Club del Mare of Marina di Campo who wanted to involve us. This year is particularly significant for us considering the fact that Soroptimist International intended to promote a project, called ‘Women and Sport’, which, divided into various declinations, aims to make people reflect on the gap that still exists by addressing issues such as gender equality, equal treatment between men and women e discriminationboth in the professional and amateur fields. Furthermore, we fully support the choice to take advantage of this regatta to address the issue of violence against women; in fact, the typical red ‘ribbon’ was placed on the sails which symbolizes violence against women and a red bench, with the number 1522 clearly visible on it to call in case of need, was transported to the various places that hosted the regattas. We believe – continues the President – that widespread knowledge is the first step for a broad reflection on the part of men and new generations with a view to reducing the phenomenon. By donating a plaque to the first female finisher for ILCA 4 and ILCA 6, in addition to rewarding the excellent athletes, we intend to encourage women to practice sports in general with particular attention to sports often considered masculine.”
