LIVORNO – Illicit intermediation and exploitation of labor. The accusations against ten people who ended up under arrest following an operation by the Carabinieri in Piombino (Livorno).
These are citizens of Pakistani origin. The investigation, called “Barefoot”, “made it possible to reconstruct the illicit use of labor carried out by six owners of individual businesses operating in the agricultural sector, who also made use of other people for recruitment, daily transport and the control of the workers employed, taking advantage of their state of need, 67 citizens of Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationality hosted in the extraordinary reception center ‘Le Caravelle’ in Piombino, for the harvesting of vegetables or olives, as well as cleaning of vineyards on land in the provinces of Livorno and Grosseto”.
The investigators found the lack of a regular employment contract, the violation of working hours, with the victims forced to continue for up to 10 hours, and of the economic treatment. In one case the payment of 0.97 euros per hour was established.
