The final budget for the year 2023 and the budget for 2024 of the Order of Architects of Agrigento have been approved. During the annual meeting of members, after the report of the President and the Treasurer, the final balance of one of the most productive years in the history of the Order of Agrigento was approved: the year of the centenary of the Foundation of the Orders of Italian Architects . “In the face of a balanced budget – states the president of the Order, Rino La Mendola – in 2023 we carried out a series of activities, not only as an institutional body to protect the category and good architecture, but also as a promoter of the socio-economic development of the provincial territory”.
“The Assembly of members – adds the treasurer of the Order, Salvatore Porretta – positively evaluated the final budget, which closed in balance, with good cash liquidity, thanks to the recovery of credits started during the year, during which, by accessing the resources of the PNRR – Mission 1 Component 1 – Investment 1.4, we managed to start a path for the progressive digitalisation of secretarial activities and to therefore make the services offered to members more efficient”.
“For the current year – concludes La Mendola – the strong project is to launch Mediterranea: a biennial of Art and Architecture in the Valley of the Temples which could involve artists and architects of clear international fame who, starting from 2025, on a regular basis biennial, they would be called upon to offer their artistic and professional contribution to fuel a growing cultural comparison between the countries bordering the Mediterranean, simultaneously stimulating new art and new quality contemporary architecture. The idea, which the Order intends to carry forward in unison with the competent institutions, would constitute a notable element of tourist attraction and would relaunch Agrigento as the gateway to Europe in the Mediterranean, precisely in the year in which the nomination of the city of temples in the Italian Capital of Culture”.
Below are the main activities carried out by the Order of Architects in 2023
Work. On the topic of work, the contributions offered by the Order, together with the Regional Council of the Orders, to the drafting of regional law 12, with which the Government and the Regional Assembly implemented the Contract Code by inserting important changes to open up the public works market to young people and talented professionals and to simplify the process of planning and execution of public works.
Airport – On the need to overcome the atavistic infrastructural isolation of the Agrigento area, the Order has constantly carried out a series of stimulating activities towards the competent institutions and political representatives to promote the concrete creation of an airport serving the City of temples and central-southern Sicily, indicating a roadmap and a technical path, already profitably started by the Free Municipal Consortium, with the drafting of a feasibility study, currently under examination by the Ministry of Infrastructure, for the inclusion, in the National airport plan, of the Agrigento airport which would be fundamental to capitalize on the extraordinary environmental resources of our land, promoting a concrete socio-economic relaunch.
Cultural promotion. With the aim of promoting good architecture, the Order hosted a series of conferences by famous interpreters of contemporary architecture, of international caliber, such as Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo, Franco Purini, Alberto Ferlenga and Massimiliano Fuksas. At the same time, in June, as part of the national Open Studi Aperti event, we organised, in the upper atrium of the municipal building of Sciacca, an exhibition of projects by architects from Agrigento which fully involved, not only the professionals, but also especially the general public, achieving the objective of bringing the architect closer to the citizen to make civil society understand the importance of good architecture for the quality of our cities and our daily life.
Design competitions. To promote the socio-economic relaunch of the provincial territory we remember the technical and logistical contribution offered to the Libero Consorzio and the Municipalities of Grotte, Montevago, Racalmuto, Raffadali, Santa Margherita Belice to announce six design competitions, thanks to which as many projects were acquired , useful for accessing community funds and carrying out urban redevelopment interventions in the provincial territory, for a total amount of 25 million euros. The same contribution was offered to the Valle dei Templi Park Authority to announce the design competition for the restoration and valorisation of the ancient Greek Theater of Eraclea Minoa.
Fifth edition of “Living in the country”. As part of the national event “Abitare il Paese”, during the year, the Order involved three schools from Agrigento: the Agrigento Centro comprehensive institute, the Leonardo scientific high school and the Rapisardi musical comprehensive institute of Canicattì with the objective of making students protagonists of planning and valorisation of the territory in which they live. The students’ project proposals concerned the urban areas surrounding the schools (in Agrigento: Villa Lizzi, Villa Iannuzzo and the external spaces of the Leonardo high school; in Canicattì: the Oltreponte area). The activities carried out in the province were presented at the MAXXI in Rome, on the occasion of an event dedicated to the developments on the national territory of the “Living in the Country” project.
Training. As regards training and professional updating, more than 40 training events were organised, which covered most of the topics faced daily by professionals, such as safety, fire prevention and minimum environmental criteria.
