Centre-right, now a new summit but Fdi remains firm on Iandoli

These are hours of great frenzy for the Avellino centre-right. Today the discussions will officially resume to reach the indication of a candidate for mayor, but even in recent days the telephone lines of the protagonists of the affair have become significantly overheated. Particular traffic was recorded along the Avellino – Pescara axis, the latter city which hosted the Fratelli d’Italia programmatic conference.

There are so many unknowns and it is no coincidence that it has not yet been possible to establish even the nature of the coalition. If on the one hand, in fact, there are those who push for the construction of a civic front, such as the regional councilor of the Moderates and Reformists, Livio Petitto, and the Christian Democrat deputy Gianfranco Rotondi, on the other there are those, such as the president of Fratelli d’Italia, Ines Fruncillo, is aiming for a political and identity race, so much so that she has already fielded the name of the provincial leader Modestino Iandoli.

The latter, interviewed by «Il Mattino», confirmed his candidacy, hoping, however, for the unity of the coalition to be achieved. The city secretary of the League, Maria Elena Iaverone, is open to discussion, but appears cautious. «I take note of Iandoli’s desire to unite the centre-right, she states, but the last time the Fratelli d’Italia parties met, she announced that she would run alone. There is an urgent need for discussion between everyone to understand how to proceed if we really want to find unity.” The provincial secretary of Forza Italia, Carmine De Angelis, however, says he is sceptical and underlines: «Unity must certainly be sought, but it is necessary to identify a synthetic name. Nothing against Iandoli, but the method used cannot be accepted, especially if we consider that the president of his party will be on the field for the European elections for which it almost seems like they wanted to build a tandem.”

The representatives of the Central Union are particularly active in these hours and are apparently defining the final details of the list to be put in place. «The UDC – states the provincial coordinator Gennaro Romei – has always supported a path that looks to the unity of the coalition, ever since the states general of Cassano Irpino took place last year. What matters to us, however, is to put in place a coalition made up of symbols because – he explains – we believe it is essential to rediscover the value of parties if we want to avoid indistinction or the construction of lists that depend on individual godfathers”. No comment on Iandoli’s name, but a hope: «We come to the table with equal dignity, knowing that to win we will have to focus on a project, not on a team as long as it exists». In short, the main objective remains to keep the front united, avoiding rifts which at this stage would be painful and dangerous, but the negotiations still seem long to achieve this. In recent days, several attempts at mediation have been made, even trying to involve personalities from outside the world of politics, but so far they have only led to a long series of “no, thanks”.

Apart from Iandoli, who is and remains in the field (currently only in Fdi quota), there are several names on the table. First of all, that of the outgoing city councilor Costantino Preziosi, a historic reference of the center-right and appreciated across the board both here and in Rome. Then, the journalist Rino Genovese, strongly sponsored by the mayor of Montefalcione, Angelo Antonio D’Agostino, and ready to wear the jacket of pure citizenship. Then, the provincial coordinator of the Central Union, Gennaro Romei. All personalities who enjoy consensus in some way, but who remain in the balance due to the lack of clarity regarding the perimeter of the team. It is known that various attempts are being made to try to also involve the civic groups linked to the former mayor Gianluca Festa and left orphans of leadership, but, at least until today, the latter have remained firm in their positions, convinced of the need to offer to the city a proposal that is in continuity with the administrative experience just archived.

This, on the one hand, sets limits in terms of expanding the team and on the other, puts out of play the names that have emerged so far given that from Genovese to Preziosi via Romei and Iandoli, these are figures that are absolutely alternative to the latest government experience.
