Rome-Sanremo. «I understand that during the electoral campaign for the European elections everyone is interested in everything in the hope of winning votes and promises are made after promises. But it is strange that the PD parliamentarian Andrea Orlando is scandalized on the issue of Ligurian prisons, apparently unaware that he was Minister of Justice in the Renzi and Gentiloni governments” he denounces Donato Capecegeneral secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union SAPPE, the first and most representative of the Blue Basques, commenting on some statements by parliamentarian Orlando who, after the visit to the Sanremo prison in recent days, presented a question to the Chamber to the Minister of Justice.

«Orlando calls for “a turning point” on Ligurian penitentiary policies. But when SAPPE asked him, the Keeper of the Seals, for investments and greater use of alternative punishments, he responded with the wicked choice to close the S. Agostino prison in Savona and the regional administration of Genoa overnight, merging it with that of Turin ( absurd and nefarious decision) as well as to abolish the Regional Operations Center of the Penitentiary Police, which coordinated the security policies of all Ligurian prisons. You cannot therefore promise more security during the electoral campaign and then close legality facilities such as prisons when you are in government, as Orlando did”, continues Capece. «What was the point of closing a prison like the one in Savona without first having a new operational detention facility in the Savona area? What was the point of spending millions of euros on the renovation of the S. Agostino structure if it was then decided to close it? And suppress the regional penitentiary board of Genoa and the regional operations center of the penitentiary police, also based in the Ligurian capital?”

Capece finally highlights that «The city of Savona and its territory can no longer wait for the construction of a new prison: Savona, seat of the Court, is the only province in Italy that does not have a penal institution – despite the promises of the various politicians, of the territoriality of the punishment but above all of the Constitution – and for this reason I thought it appropriate to write again to the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio highlighting how much it is a priority to speed up the administrative procedures”, concludes Capece, general secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union SAPPE, who , in appreciating “the commitments to encourage the construction of a new prison in the Savona area”, however, notes that, for now, everything seems to have stopped”.
