former mayor Pompeo Molfetta presents his book

On Tuesday 30 April at 6.30 pm the Mondadori Bookstore in via Marconi in Mesagne hosts the presentation of “Piccole ignobili” (Booksprint) by Pompeo Molfetta. The author, doctor and politician (he was municipal administrator and mayor of Mesagne) will talk with Giancarlo Canuto. «There are stories in which the stories told do not seem to belong to us and others in which we are as if dragged by the strength of the words – writes Professor Maria De Mauro in the preface -. The “Piccole ignobili” stories belong to this second genre, Pompeo Molfetta’s first narrative work.

Anyone who knows the author knows that storytelling is congenial to him and finds in the pages of these stories his orality of which they seem to reproduce the mimicry, full of figures, cultured, popular words, adverbs, adjectives, neologisms”. «What is striking, in fact, is above all the richness of the style – observes the preface -: Molfetta’s writing is never stunted or dry, on the contrary everything is rich and at the service of a detailed narrative: characters, facts, situations, relationships , environments, landscapes, everything is precise and clear, thanks to a truly original descriptive ability that the reader will notice right from the incipit of the first story (The processionary)».

And again: «Pompeo is a keen observer and scrutinizer of life. It is common life, daily experience, the practice and feelings of normal creatures, in fact, that set these provincial stories in motion to the point where an equilibrium is broken and the truth emerges, is expressed, contracted, in a few lines . End of story – he continues -. As if to say that in everyday life, in the sleepy progress of things, there is a breaking point that reveals the plots and makes them, finally, clear. Although linked to each other, the first four also from a thematic point of view – writes De Mauro -, the stories express different chords: from the fantastic to the ironic, erotic, yellow, sentimental one”.

«Used to practice, as a light-hearted amateur, all the arts, from painting, to music, from sculpture to theatre, to non-fiction, narrative writing must have become a compendium of every language experienced – we read again in the preface -. From a small plot a fabric of incredible stories emerged: in the timeless, but always defined and recognizable space of an unidentified South, many small stories as elements of a more complex whole, build a mental narrative before being stylistic and thematic in where all the characters, some of whom the reader will become very fond of (Don Ciccillo) even the most treacherous, are never judged for their actions, but loved with irony and, at times, fun”.
