water quality “excellent” problems only at river mouths

The sampling data dates back to the days between April 18 and April 22, when the regional agency carried out careful tests. The stretches of sea prohibited for diving are the stretch of sea in front of the Mouth of the Irno (180 meters east of the river up to the municipal swimming pools), where the presence of escherichia coli and out-of-control intestinal enterococci were found; the same negative situation is recorded on the sfree beach from the Fuorni to the Picentino river, where the water is not suitable for swimming and the quality is highly poor. In Torrione, the samples taken on 18 April showed even “excellent” water quality, albeit with extremely low presence of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. The stretches of sea are also classified as “excellent”. Mercatello (between the Marconi seafront and the Colombo seafront), as well as the one in front of the Colombo seafront up to the Santa Margherit streamto. Until via Leucosia the sea water of the capital is excellent, like the beach south of the Marina d’Arechi port up to the mouth of the Fuorni river. The water temperature recorded on April 18th was 16 degrees. But the temperature is destined to rise as the heat increases. Another stretch of beach preferred by Salerno residents, but not falling within the municipal territory of Salerno, is the one included Crestarella Tower in Radice breakwater (La Baia beach) also classified as excellent. In short, the conditions are good for starting the swimming season. But the nightmares of the past remain.
POLLUTION
Many people ask themselves questions about why the waters of the coast are so dirty in certain periods of the summer. What raises the controversy is the opposition municipal councilor, leader of Oltre, Donato Pessolano. «From Santa Teresa to the mouth of the Irno – writes the councilor – from Torrione to Mercatello, from Torre Angellara to the border with Pontecagnano: all the city beaches have for years been victims of inattention and neglect on the part of the municipal administration. Responsibility cannot only be attributed to the rude people on duty. On the one hand it is true that a minority of users of city beaches show no respect for places with inestimable landscape and environmental value. On the other hand, it must be added that the Municipality is completely disinterested.”
