PESCARA. The sea of Pescara is clean, along the entire coast. This is what Arta says, which carries out sampling on the Abruzzo sea every month. From the samples taken on 15 April, only one critical issue emerged in the area in front of Via Leopardi, but analyzes repeated two days later showed that the data had returned to normal.
There are a total of nine collection points in the city, between the northern borders with Montesilvano and the southern borders with Francavilla. Eight samplings were found to comply with the legal limits. The only problem affected the area of via Leopardi, where the intestinal enterococci levels were exceeded, returning to the legal values in the subsequent sampling.
The bathability of the sea is one of the central parameters for obtaining the reconfirmation of the blue flag. However, it is not the only element that Fee, the Foundation for Environmental Education, which awards recognition to seaside resorts every year, takes into account. Among the numerous requirements there is also the activity conducted for environmental education. On this point Pescara is in a bind. With the largest Eco School network in Italy, which sees the participation of 20 thousand students, from 54 primary, middle and high schools, the Adriatic capital has become a pilot municipality to also train other Italian bodies in the project. After the mayor in December Carlo Masci he had been in Messina precisely to support the Sicilian municipality in starting the environmental education process among schools, in recent days the mayor was in Gaeta as part of the third national summit on the blue forum sea economy.
The seminar “Educational Blue Flag 2024 – The role of education”, after the introduction of Claudio Mazza, president of Fee Italia, saw a round table during which Masci spoke. «It is a source of pride for us to have been invited as speakers to this seminar», states the mayor «and it is the clear signal of an activity carried out to obtain the blue flag which has received the approval of the highest institutional leaders and the Fee . Pescara has become a point of reference in the national panorama in terms of environmental sustainability. It’s a continuous job, especially with kids, because we are building the future for them.”
In recent years, the Eco School project has represented a substantial part of the score that has allowed Pescara to obtain the blue flag. There is no certainty about recognition in 2024 yet, but second Esther Zazzero, responsible for the protection and enhancement of the sea and river of the Municipality, «the parameters to be respected are all there, starting from the bathing waters which are excellent on the three points for which we asked for the blue flag, i.e. north (from the Naiads to 4 Vele) , south (from the tourist port to Francavilla) and center (from 4 Vele to the Sirenetta) and by the percentage of waste separation which has increased above 50 percent, passing through the Eco School project that the mayor spoke about in Gaeta, of how he improved the city. Thanks to the training”, underlines Zazzero, “the students have contributed to reducing water waste in schools, they go with water bottles avoiding plastic, more and more people use sustainable means to reach them, and in 80 percent of the schools it has been introduced the ecological snack”.
