On 23 April 1929 the fountain of the municipal villa was inaugurated with great fanfare. That cheerful gush that comes out of a pile of stones, pieces of rocks caught in the sea, is not a simple fountain for embellishment. In fact, it was built by the accountant Bissanti, financier of the pipe installation work that allowed all the houses in the city to have running water, as a symbol of the arrival of water in Manfredonia. It must also be remembered that the discovery of Grotta Scaloria, an authentic testimony of life in the Neolithic, coincidentally linked to the cult of waters. The access to the cave, in fact, was brought to light by the excavations carried out for the laying of modern pipes. On the occasion of the centenary of the arrival of water in the province of Foggia, the Apulian Aqueduct organized a traveling exhibition to tell the story of water in Puglia. The exhibition, entitled “The fountain tells”, will be in Manfredonia from 16 April to 4 May. In the heart of the historic center of the city, at the Ex Fabbriche San Francesco, you can admire more than 60 photographic shots and actual artefacts, including utensils, barrels, amphorae and 20th century vases used for collecting and conserving water drinkable, before the arrival of the Aqueduct in the “siticulous Apulia” and in the homes of all the Apulians. The fountain tells is a great project for the preservation of memory, aimed above all at school children, and at the same time an opportunity to underline the importance of the water service and the irreplaceable role of public water for the well-being of citizens and development of the territory.
