Viterbo – Brawl at the Shrine, the mayor justifies herself: “It could have happened anywhere”

For the first citizen there doesn’t seem to be a “safety issue” in the city, but for the residents yesterday’s events speak volumes

VITERBO – In Viterbo everything is fine and episodes of petty crime “are at the center of the concerns of those who administer”. The speaker is the mayor Chiara Frontini, moved by the episode that yesterday reminded all the people of Viterbo that in the city there is a security problem that is greatly underestimated by everyone: administration and law enforcement.

Once again, the first citizen tried to distance herself by recalling that “Since January, there have been no more episodes of insecurity at the Shrine”. It’s a shame that this is a truth that omits many other realities, such as that of the residents of the area who – on a daily basis – witness drug dealing incidents before everyone’s eyes, in particular in Piazza Unità d’Italia, between the car park and the Almadiani church .

To defend himself, Frontini once again reiterated the data that the Viterbo Police Headquarters had shared at the end of 2023, recalling that “crimes are decreasing”. Another truth that clashes badly with the perception of insecurity of the residents, which the Police Commissioner Fausto Vinci himself had underlined as a problem to be addressed. A theme very dear to the police and it is no coincidence that the last ceremony dedicated to the anniversary of the foundation of the force was held right in the centre, in the San Faustino district, one of the “hottest” of the capital, a well-known drug dealing and petty crime.

“The safety of citizens and the fight against degradation and petty crime are at the center of the concerns of those who administer the territory despite having no operational functions and responsibilities – declared the mayor – In recent months I have always been in contact with the Prefect and the Police Commissioner , the highest authorities responsible for guaranteeing the safety of citizens”.

A partial admission that there is a problem, but it is there. “A lot has been done, there is still more to do”.

The focal point of yesterday’s story, however, seems to be another for the first citizen: “Since January there have been no more episodes of insecurity in the Sacrario area and also yesterday’s event, whose protagonists are all of Italian nationality and 3 have already been arrested, it could have happened anywhere because it was motivated by futile reasons.” A statement that sounds more like justification than anything else. The administration’s promises were in fact to press the accelerator on the security issue, since – at least during the election campaign – the problem was far from hidden.

In any case, it seems that “The cameras in the area recorded everything and other subjects were reported. The prompt intervention against fights and phenomena of violence by the police, even yesterday, promptly repressed and avoided worse scenarios”.
