ANCONA – Il rector Gian Luca Gregori as president of Webuild, as the Salini Impregilo group is called today, which since 1906 has been building large infrastructures throughout the world and is active in 50 countries. And not only. The professor Francesco Maria Chelli65 years old, full professor of economic statistics at the Giorgio Fuà Faculty of Economics, designated as president of Istat, the statistics institute of which he has been “regent” since May 2023. A spring of prestigious appointments for the Polytechnic University of Marche, which is a recognition of the excellent profile of its teaching staff.

Rector Gregori – 63 years old, originally from San Benedetto del Tronto, economist expert in marketing and industrial organization – had already been proposed at the end of March as a possible successor to Donato Iacovone at the top of Webuild, in the list presented by the shareholders Salini spa and Cdp Equity. An indication implemented on April 24th by the shareholders’ meeting of the sustainable construction and infrastructure giant, one of the major global players in the sector which has signed iconic projects such as the expansion of the Panama Canal and leads the consortium called to build the Bridge on the Strait of Messina. An extremely prestigious presidential position (even without delegations) for the rector of Univpm Gian Luca Gregori, former member of Terna’s board of directors, who last year had to give up a possible designation as president of INPS due to convalescence after A surgery.

President “in pectore”

But another national institute, Istat, will bear the signature of Univpm. Professor Francesco Maria Chelli, professor of Economic Statistics originally from Porto San Giorgio (Fermo), is now president “in pectore” of the National Institute of Statistics, a public research body. The Polytechnic professor has been acting president of Istat since May 2023, as the most senior member of the Institute’s Council upon the expiry of the previous president’s mandate. But now Professor Chelli’s profile has been chosen for the presidency among the 20 candidates who responded to the notice published last February 22 on the website of the Department of Public Administration and Istat. The nominations were selected by a Commission, made up of a state lawyer, an accounting magistrate and a statistics professor, who indicated the three most suitable candidates to the minister Paolo Zangrillo.

The high profile

«The choice fell on Chelli for her high professional profile, her significant research and scientific production activity and her proven managerial, managerial and technical, scientific and administrative coordination skills», explains the Ministry of Public Administration, after a proposal of the minister, the Council of Ministers approved on Monday the start of the procedure for the appointment of Chelli as president of Istat. After almost a year of stalemate and the withdrawal of the confirmation proposal of the outgoing president Gian Carlo Blangiardo, the Government is now turning to a high-profile technician. The procedure for the appointment of Professor Chelli will continue with further steps. The president of Istat is appointed by decree of the President of the Republic, on the proposal of the Prime Minister, following a resolution of the Council of Ministers, to be submitted to the favorable opinion (by a majority of two thirds of the members) of the competent parliamentary commissions.

The recent appointments come in addition to other prestigious positions. In February 2023, Professor Gerardo Villanacci, professor of Private Law at the Faculty of Economics, was appointed president of the Superior Council for Cultural Heritage and Landscape, a consultative body of the Ministry of Culture. Last August, Professor Francesco Corvaro, Associate in Industrial Technical Physics, was appointed by the ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Environment as Special Envoy for Climate Change, also in view of Cop28 and the Italian presidency of the G7 in 2024. In February Prof Marco D’Orazio, Deputy Pro-Rector of Univpm, has been appointed representative of the Ministry of University and Research in the Central Scientific Technical Committee for fire prevention.
