REGGIO EMILIA – Three things strike the note with which Giovanni Tarquinicenter-right mayoral candidate in Reggio, tried to clarify his thoughts on April 25 after criticism from political opponents.
The first is that Tarquini, when he says that “there is no scale that tips to one side or the other when it comes to violence”, when he exclaims “don’t tell me that violence is only on one side” , puts fascism and the violence of the immediate post-war period on the same level. But 20 years of dictatorship, the dissolution of parties and associations, the union offices set on fire, the closure of newspapers, the single party, the racial laws and the deportations to extermination camps are the same thing as revenge and killings by of loose cannons of the partisan movement or of common criminals?
The second striking thing is that Tarquini does not distance himself from his colleague and president of the Bar Association, Enrico Della Capanna, who had commented on the stance of the centre-right candidate by writing on Tarquini’s Facebook profile: “Dear Giovanni, you’re right! In 2024 we still haven’t gotten rid of anti-fascism.” Words that have sparked indignation among many lawyers, but the candidate lawyer doesn’t bat an eyelid.
And here we are at the third point. In his note, Tarquini speaks of “fronts that are historically opposed”. Let’s see these fronts. One was fascism. The other front was not communism: it was those Italians of every political colour, monarchists and socialists, liberals and communists, Catholics and shareholders who during the twenty years and in the war of liberation fought against the dictatorship, paying with beatings, prison and confinement, when not with life. Which of the two fronts does Tarquini identify with? Certainly not in the fascist one, but he never defines himself as anti-fascist. It is a very different position from that expressed on the occasion of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the 25th of April: “Unity in anti-fascism”.
