Italian Under 23 Championships – On the first day of competition in Rende, victory and title for Simone Mencarelli in the men’s sword

YIELD –Simone Mencarelli wins the Italian Under 23 men’s sword title in Rende, on the first day of the category’s tricolor event. On the Calabrian platforms, the Fiamme Oro swordsman repeated the title won a year ago in Padua among the Youth, thus also securing a place for the Under 23 European Championships. In the roll of honor he succeeds Giulio Gaetani who won in 2023 in Vercelli .

Already first after the group stage, Simone Mencarelli overcame Filippo Armaleo, standard bearer of the Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Azzurre and silver medalist, in the final match, with a score of 15-7. Third step of the podium went to Tommaso Raffaele of Società del Giardino Milano and Marco Malaguti of Circolo Schermistico Forlivese, overcome respectively by the winner and second place by 15-14 and 15-6 in the two semi-finals.

Placement among the “top 8” also for Fabrizio Cuomo (Army Sports Centre), Riccardo Masarin (Società del Giardino Milano), Nicolò Del Contrasto (Società del Giardino Milano) and Marco Paganelli (Accademia Ferma Marchesa Torino). The swordsmen’s competition, the largest event of the three days in Rende, saw 155 athletes at the start.

“It’s my first season among the Assoluti, it wasn’t easy, and this Italian title is worth a lot. I won it by always believing in it, as was seen above all with the comeback in the semi-final – said Simone Mencarelli at the end of the match –. The dedication goes to my father and teacher, Maurizio, and to my girlfriend Lucrezia, always by my side even in difficult moments. The goal is to continue working, thinking race after race, to grow in performance and results.”

Tomorrow the second day of competitions at the Italian Under 23 Championships. The women’s épée will be on the stage with the start at 9 am and the women’s foil which will start from 11 am. Final phases live streaming on Federscherma TV 1.
