Gal Pesca – Gargano sea: promoters of sustainability in the blue economy

GAL PESCA – GARGANO MARE: PROMOTERS OF SUSTAINABILITY IN THE BLUE ECONOMY

The importance of the sustainable and responsible use of marine resources, promoting the conservation of the oceans and the valorisation of economic activities linked to the sea in a sustainable way, is an increasingly relevant fact in the global economy, and has an impact on our territory; an example of this is the National Program of the European Fund for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture (PN FEAMPA) 2021/2027.

In this context, the coastal area of the Province of Foggia plays a crucial role with its fish supply chain and its related activities in the development of a sustainable blue economy of the northern coast of Puglia (including Manfredonia, Chieuti, Serracapriola, Lesina, San Nicandro Garganico, Cagnano Varano, Carpino, Ischitella, Rodi Garganico, Vico del Gargano, Peschici, Vieste, Mattinata, Monte Sant’Angelo, Zapponeta and Tremiti Islands). The complexity of the social, environmental and economic system requires a strategic, organic and collaborative approach from all the actors involved.

Thus arose the need to create a legally constituted structure, called Gal Pesca Gargano Mare Sc arl (Limited Liability Consortium Company), which is responsible for the participatory process and the implementation of the Local Development Strategy (SSL).

To this end, the working group has activated an exploratory process in the north of Puglia, aimed at defining a local public-private partnership, launching a participatory and innovative process to encourage local communities to express their needs and present project proposals useful for the definition of the Local Development Strategy of the forming GAL Pesca – Gargano Mare, to be nominated for the Puglia Region tender.

The task of activating the investigation process aimed at forming the partnership and establishing a mixed capital GAL Pesca Gargano Mare consortium company has been entrusted to AGCI Puglia, an association that represents, assists and protects cooperatives and social enterprises active in the region of Puglia.

The task, promoted by AGCI Puglia, is also supported by other employers’ associations in the fishing sector: Coldiretti Puglia (Impresa Pesca), Confcooperative (FEDAGRI Pesca Puglia), Legacoop Puglia, PescAgri (CIA), UNCI Agroalimentare and Federpesca .

For this reason, a series of events will start next week aimed at building and defining a Local Development Strategy (SSL) in the fishing, aquaculture, biodiversity and tourism and culture sectors in the coastal marine communities of the Gargano within the of the National Program of the European Fund for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture (PN FEAMPA) 2021/2027.
