BUSTO ARSIZIO – I am already almost a thousand signatures collected by the web petition against the padel courts at the Sacconago athletics track. The project, financed with 700 thousand euros of public funds from the “Sport and suburbs” tender, is intended to «destroying a green oasis» dear to residents of the Madonna in Campagna area. «There is a risk that it will be transformed into football and padel fields, cutting down the 35 trees present and devastating biodiversity.”
The mobilization
Launched by Michela Toia on change.org, the petition has already been created in just a few days The set goal of a thousand members was almost achieved. Entitled “Let’s preserve the territory of Madonna in Campagna in Busto Arsizio as a green area”, it essentially asks for give up on the padel and soccer fields project which should be built next to the athletics track in via Arturo Tosi. «This place is dear to me and many other people in the area, it is one of the few green areas left in this area» writes the promoter. «This transformation would not only destroy the natural environment we love, but it would also reduce the quality of life for us residents.”
The project
The work is also contested because «lacking in funds and services»: at least 44 thousand euros of municipal funds must be added to the 700 thousand euros of the loan. And the latest version of the project, which dates back to last fall, provides the renunciation of coverage of the fields, due to the increases in raw material prices, in addition to the absence of toilets already assumed in the original project. The idea of padel next to the athletics track was born in 2021, to make the management of the “Angelo Borri” athletics center more economically sustainable: the Municipality took part in the “Sport and suburbs” tender and was awarded the 700 thousand euros of financing, out of the 744 thousand euros estimate for the work.
