The ceremony commemorating the 79th anniversary of the Liberation of Italy was held yesterday morning with the laying of a laurel wreath and the rendering of honors to those who fell for their country, freedom and peace, at the Park’s War Memorial. of Montereale in Potenza, in the presence of the highest authorities and the combat and military associations. Councilor Cosimo Latronico brought greetings from the president of the Basilicata region Vito Bardi. «The main aspiration of a people is its freedom. – states Latronico – April 25th (1945) for us is a salient date that reminds us of the break between a totalitarian regime, the fascist one, and the birth of a new era, the republican and constitutional one which began to build spaces of freedom for ‘Italy and for Europe. Sovereignty of peoples and constitution within states with systems firmly anchored to the principles of protection of individual and community rights. April 25 is a powerful symbol of our national history, a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought to restore the path to democracy. It is a day that celebrates the victory of freedom over regimes that denied the natural and ontological rights of people and communities. The memory of the tragedy that cost death and destruction to many Italians and Lucanians, which this monument symbolizes, is right, but it is also the day of celebration of the values of freedom, social justice, dialogue and peace between peoples. We are aware that the totalitarianism of the 20th century, fascism, Nazism, communism, caused a dark and tragic era for humanity. We are here today to celebrate the hope that animated those peoples who were able to rise from the material and moral rubble and were able to clear the darkness of oppression and the many painful wounds inflicted on the living flesh of the people. Today we affirm that the values of the April 25th celebration, light against darkness, must prevail for a world that wants to live on peace and cooperation between men and peoples. Best wishes to all of us, in memory of many Lucanians who dedicated themselves to building the values we celebrate today.” Also present at the ceremony was Fratelli d’Italia senator Gianni Rosa: «This is an important day and it is a duty to be present at the demonstrations. The memory must always be alive, we must remember the history of our country also to reflect on the reasons of all parties.” In his speech, the Prefect of the province of Potenza Michele Campanaro focused on the young students who contributed to the success of the event. He then read a passage from President Mattarella’s speech on the occasion of 25 April 2021, which underlines how the Resistance was a choral movement, which involved all of Italy: «Even in Southern Italy, the Resistance has written important pages of history, not always adequately underlined and known. In Lucania, in particular, the Resistance arose from the need to defend itself against the violence of the German occupier, which first developed through the refusal of collaboration and materialized, along the way, in conscious transgression and open revolt against Nazi-fascism”. And finally addressing young people: «The stories of the Italians who died for the Resistance and Liberation, even in our beloved Basilicata, continue to speak to us today and tell us that there are great ideals and dreams to be achieved that are worth fighting for and that they are good causes that must be made to triumph, but they also tell us, today more than ever, that we must always say no to the violence of war and conflict.”
