Ten thousand new parking spacesto be obtained through car parks exchangersnew parking lots multi-storey in railway areas or disused spaces and free parking areas designed specifically for Florentines, so as to reduce traffic and pollution in the city. To which are added the agreements for the use, in certain time slots, of the spaces of public and private bodies, discounted rates for municipal ones and the idea of using the app Infomobility Florence to receive suggestions on where to park, also making your parking spaces available for a few hours a day.
A new piece in the electoral program of the Democratic Party candidate
After home, trade and craftsmanship, the Democratic mayoral candidate, Sara Funaro, launches the parking level in an attempt to find solutions to a widespread problem in the city. «The numbers speak clearly: there are over 200 thousand cars circulating in Florence and there are not enough parking spaces, a gap that must be filled. The lack of parking spaces is a problem for many reasons: it wastes people’s time, creates pollution and traffic, and increases the phenomenon of uncontrolled parking, making some public spaces disorderly and less liveable.”
The target
The objective is to create 10 thousand new parking spaces thanks to more than 50 interventions, including those envisaged in the Poc and connected to the tramway, to create and expand parking spaces in Florence, equipping each area with columns for electric charging of vehicles, bicycle spaces and a tree cover of 70%.
Viale Europa, Rovezzano, Piagge… but nothing in the centre
In the plan presented by Funaro, where i Notably absent are the most critical areas such as the historic center and the Oltrarno, 3,600 spaces should come from the tramway parking lots, such as those in Viale Europa (480 spaces), Rovezzano (800 spaces) and Piagge (192 spaces), while 5 thousand from the creation of new car parks in railway or disused areas, perhaps with structures multi-storey buildings mitigated by greenery. In this second category, where free parking spaces are foreseen for residents, hourly spaces for visitors and spaces for condominiums and businesses, some projects have already been designed: a multi-storey car park with 2 thousand spaces in via Campo D’Arrigo, 150 spaces in viale Talenti, the same number in the former Enel area in via Mariti, 200 in the Rifredi railway area and 300 in the former Ataf depot in viale dei Mille.
Free seats for Florentines
Finally, to exceed the 10,000 mark, the Democratic candidate imagines 1,560 new free spaces only for residents in surface car parks, natural rest areas and structural car parks created by Palazzo Vecchio: the examples are the three rest areas in Settignano with 49 spaces , the car park in via Villamagna with 80 spaces, the road ones in via Simone Martini for 80 spaces and the one in Fortezza with 150 spaces reserved for Florentines living in the centre.
The reorganization of existing spaces
In addition to the creation, in parallel, Funaro indicates the need to distribute motorists more effectively throughout the municipal area. «To these are added – she explains – thousands more spaces created by optimizing existing spaces: 2 thousand new spaces for residents thanks to agreements for the use of public and private bodies’ car parks at night which are used by workers and customers during the day ( see the supermarket in Piazza Leopoldo and the Unifi one in Viale Morgagni for a total of 400 spaces), the reserve of free spaces for residents in the 8 thousand parking spaces of the structure with the introduction of dynamic tariffs (lower prices when parking is empty) and the experimentation of innovative digital services”.
“Smart parking”
In this last case the new features are the smart parking program, with the IF platform advising users in real time of the freest parking spaces near the destination and the park sharing program dedicated to owners of parking spaces who will be able to make them available at certain times and days to anyone interested in exchange for a low fee.
