Prevention in the fight against stroke: free screening in Palermo

PALERMO – TheCerebral stroke constitutes one of the main causes of disability globallyaffecting over 12 million people worldwide each year.

Despite the work of primary prevention of stroke and raising awareness on the recognition of initial symptoms, in Palermo hospitalizations for this disease remain unchanged over the years.

Based on the epidemiological data available, it is estimated that approximately one in four people will be affected by a stroke during their lifetime.

The good news is that up to 90% of strokes can be prevented by adopting one lifestyle healthy with good eating habits, doing regular physical activitykeeping the blood pressurecholesterol and, of course, avoiding the smoke of cigarettes.

Furthermore, today there are very effective treatments for stroke. But it’s about time-dependent therapies. This is why it is essential to learn to recognize the symptoms of strokesuch as sudden weakness in an arm or leg or difficulty speaking, and call 911 immediately.

ALICE (Association for the Fight against Cerebral Stroke) West Palermo, a non-profit association made up of healthcare workers and patients, she worked at the Generali Palermo Grattacielo agency to carry out a free vascular screening aimed at identifying personal vascular risk factors modifiable by each participant.

A part of the interview was dedicated to information on what the presenting symptoms of a stroke are and the importance of promptly recognizing them.
