An inmate in the Catanzaro prison created chaos with continuous acts of violence, also setting fire to the mattress of the cell in which he was locked up. The episode occurred two days ago.

This was made known today by the Sappe penitentiary police union. The man had to go before the Disciplinary Board, for previous violations.

After various requests from the officer, considering that he was very late, the inmate allegedly left the cell and attacked him with kicks and punches. Taken to the closed ward, he allegedly set fire to the mattress, causing a thick blanket of smoke.

Three policemen, in addition to the one attacked, had to resort to hospital treatment because they were intoxicated by smoke. “We learned, among other things – say Giovanni Battista Durante, deputy general secretary of Sappe and Francesco Ciccone, regional secretary – that, in less than a year, he would have been surprised three times, therefore with three devices different, to use or, in any case, illegitimately possess mobile phones.

What surprises us – writes Sappe – is that the same prisoner, following so many violations, continues to remain in the Catanzaro prison. We hope that someone will finally decide to apply the current provisions and have him transferred.”
