Films, meetings, events: the Trento Film Festival on mountain cinema (and culture) begins

The new edition of the Trento Film Festival, the seventy-second, starts today: films, meetings, appointments, exhibitions on stage until May 5th in 40 locations in the Trentino capital. “Mountains and Cultures” is the combination that encompasses the spirit of the festival, as explained by president Mauro Leveghi: «In the plural, both, because there are many mountains in the world, and we like to think of the ways of looking at them as infinite , to live them and interpret them.”

An increasingly heterogeneous festival, therefore, with increasingly broader horizons, a focus on the fragility of the mountains and a new director of the film program: Mauro Gervasini.

Movies
As always, films are the great protagonists in Trento: 120 are on the bill, of which 25 are competing in the international competition: 24 international previews and 87 Italian ones. «The two pillars are the “International Competition” and the “Alp&Ism” section – explains Gervasini -. Twenty-five titles between feature films and shorts for each of the two sections, to clearly underline a balance, an equal balance, between two souls that have always characterized the plural identity of the Trento Film Festival”.

The mountain on the screen seen from many points of view, from fiction to documentary, from animation to experimentation, and then exploration, challenge, adventure. We also reflect on the future of the mountains and the current reality of the highlands, investigating particular realities of Trentino-Alto Adige. And there is also space for “Special Screenings”, such as the homage to Francesco Nuti.

Tomorrow, Saturday 27th, the screenings will be inaugurated by “Oura el-jbel” (Behind the mountains), the film by Mohamed Ben Attia presented as a preview at the Venice International Film Festival: mountains, magic, freedom and non-conformism on the backdrop of an unprecedented Tunisia.

One of the new features this year is the “Cincontri” column: at the end of some screenings, talks with the protagonist guests begin. Among these the writer Erri De Luca, the mountaineers Tamara Lunger, Edu Marin, Stefano Ghisolfi, the directors Enzo d’Alò and Cecilia Bozza Wolf.

The meetings and the guests
Reinhold Messner will also return to Trento as a guest, on stage on May 3 at the Teatro Sociale to celebrate the forty years of the feat that he and Hans Kammerlander accomplished on Gasherbrum I and II in 1984: the Alpine-style crossing of the two 8000ers without oxygen , without returning to base camp and without the possibility of being rescued. A feat never achieved until then. On this occasion, in collaboration with Enervit which participated in the expedition as a technical and scientific sponsor, the documentary made in 1984 by Werner Herzog, “Gasherbrum – The shining mountain”, will be screened.

Again, among the mountaineers, Silvo Karo, who will talk about his legendary ascents, and Elio Orlandi who will talk about places and people, bonds formed precisely thanks to the mountains. Another return, that of Mauro Corona, who will close the event by presenting his latest book “Le swings”.

The exhibitions
As always in Trento there is also space for exhibitions and installations. Don’t miss the exhibition “K2 1954. It was like going to the moon!” in the rooms of Palazzo Roccabruna. The seventy years since the first ascent of K2 are celebrated, through different points of view: the revolutionary equipment for the time, the football fans that welcomed the protagonists on their return, the echo of the press and the advertisements that exploited the silhouette of K2. The exhibition will remain open even after the closure of the festival, until May 18th.

Books and meetings with authors
Also in this edition, “MontagnaLibri” will host the Literary Lounge, the base camp for the presentation of books and meetings with writers. Opening the review in this case is Krzysztof Wielicki, conqueror of the first winter repeat of Everest, with his book “Solo. My climb”, scheduled today immediately after the opening ceremony.
