Gudmundsson comes out: «I dream of playing in the Premier League». The Icelander’s announcement about the future
Albert Gudmundsson, 27 years old in June, 33 appearances and 15 goals in official matches for Genoa this year, spoke about himself in a long interview with the Telegraph, a well-known British newspaper. The Icelandic striker, at the center of many transfer rumours, spoke about his future: “I have always wanted to play at the highest level – he stated – and since I was a child I have always thought about playing in the Premier League: obviously it is something that I definitely want to try.”
Gudmundsson also explained that the inspiration comes from his great-grandfather, who was called Albert like him. In the 1940s he played for Milan and then for Arsenal: “he was the second foreigner in the history of the Gunners, he reached exceptional levels that I too dream of reaching”. The surname Gudmundsson, family of footballers, is historically associated with football: “My mother’s grandfather Kristbjorg Ingadottir was the first Icelander to play in the Premier League and the second foreigner in the history of Arsenal. I never met him, but my mother told me many stories about him, after the end of his career they even wrote a book.”
He, however, Albert, moved to Genoa at the end of January 2022, a club he didn’t know: «I didn’t have much time to research coach Blessin and the club, so I used Google an hour before the plane flight. I said to myself, “Fuck it, let’s go.” The good performances in Serie B have given me confidence for this season, so far I have given my best: I knew I had the qualities and now I finally feel like I have shown them. I don’t know what this is due to, perhaps age, maturation or the fact that he knows the Italian championship better.”
