On that sad May 17th, in which the Viola general manager Joe Barone suffered an illness that later proved fatal, Atalanta-Fiorentina was postponed, with Lega Serie A never announcing the recovery date. As he explains Changing Room Chroniclesthe cause of the lack of announcement is the clogged calendar of both teams, still competing in Europe and opponents in the semi-final of the Italian Cup.
The next three midweek rounds are certainly already excluded: the first leg semi-finals against Marseille and Bruges are scheduled for Thursday 2 May, while the return matches will be played the following week. Nothing to do even for May 15th, the day of the Italian Cup final between Atalanta And Juventus. The possibility of moving it was not taken into consideration because from 27 May the Olympic stadium will be in the hands of FIDAL (Italian Athletics Federation) for the European Championships scheduled from 7 to 12 June.
The first available slot, therefore, could therefore be that of 22 May, provided that Atalanta does not reach the Europa League final. If Gasperini’s team were to eliminate Marseille, then it would be postponed until at least May 29th. But this might not be the right date either if Fiorentina qualifies for the final Conference League. If both teams reached the European finals, the only available date would be June 2, 7 days after the last day of Serie A and 12 before the start of EURO2024.
