Ilaria Salis announces with a letter her candidacy for the European elections with the Greens-Left Alliance. “After sleepless nights I have decided to accept the candidacy in the European elections, to bring the attention that you have shown me to other people who find themselves in the same situation as me and transform this unfortunate story of mine into something constructive for the protection of fundamental rights “, we read in the statement read during the press conference, in the Chamber of Deputies, by Nicola Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli, and by Ilaria’s father, Roberto.

“It is not my intention to escape the proceedings in which I am accused, but to defend myself in the trial in compliance with fundamental rights, the principles of proportionality and the presumption of innocence. I know that I am not a unique or exceptional case. I have been fortunate not to be forgotten, but similar situations of injustice are the order of the day in several European countries”, are the words of Salis. “Ilaria was silent until December 15th, from February 11th 2023. The situation has been stagnant, without progress. We have started to see some progress since the media wave started, I think the gesture made by Avs because it carries forward a concept that should be part of our democracy”, said the father of the Italian woman detained in Hungary awaiting trial on charges of having participated in the beating of some neo-Nazis.

“Since my daughter’s case broke out I have gone hat in hand to anyone who could give me a hand, in my travels I have found those who ignored me, those who slammed the door in my face and who defamed me. But I also found people who gave me a hand: among these is Elly Schlein. She didn’t offer me anything, but she said she was available to help me. I took it upon myself to report the availability that had been offered to me active since she was 15, in her own way, she therefore made her choice in maximum linearity with her political path. Whoever helped me in this devastating situation for me and my wife will always have a place in my heart”. Salis said again.
But how will Salis, detained in Budapest, campaign? “All the candidates for the European elections will be making a set for the images for the campaign. Ilaria cannot do it. We will ask the artists who want to illustrate Ilaria’s image for the campaign to do so”, announces her father.
