Catanzaro is preparing to welcome masks from all over Italy who will parade in the historic center and on the seafront for the two days of “PrimaVera in mask”.
With the artistic direction of Enzo Colacino “Giangurgolo”, tomorrow (Saturday 27 April) the procession will start from 5pm, meeting on the terrace of the San Giovanni complex, to wind along Corso Mazzini and reach Palazzo De Nobili and Villa Margherita.
Sunday 28 April the masks will move to the Lido district, with starting point at 5pm at Parco Gaslini and the parade on the seafront.
The days will also be enlivened by the presence of the historical group of the 16th century, flag-wavers and stilt walkers, the giant puppets of Varapodio and the folk group “I Giamberiani”. The event is promoted with the patronage of the Municipal Administration, the Chamber of Commerce of Catanzaro-Crotone-Vibo, the Presidency of the Regional Council and the Proloco of Catanzaro.
The event
Colacino’s merit is not only that of keeping alive an important artistic and cultural tradition of Catanzaro, but also of “promoting” the character of Giangurgolo throughout Italy, making him participate as an usher in countless events thanks to which he gained considerable popularity. Accompanying Colacino on the various stages of his tours is the “trusty” Alessio Bressi, master of the accordion and the battente guitar, a typical instrument of the popular musical tradition not only of Calabria.
Thanks to the “Masquerade Spring”, Catanzaro also becomes the stage for an important carnival event.
In fact, there will be over thirty masks from all over Italy who will take part in the initiative, spread over two days. The first will take place in the historic center of the city, with a parade on Corso Mazzini. The second will take place in the Gaslini park, in the Lido district, with a parade of masks along the seafront.
«”Spring in disguise” – he commented Colacino – it is not only a parade of masks from all over Italy, but it is also an exchange of cultures, traditions, beauty and colours. Because masks bring not only knowledge of the traditions of which they are an expression, but also joy to people of all ages.”
The road plan
In order to allow the event to take place in an orderly manner and to guarantee road safety, the local Police Command has issued a specific ordinance to regulate traffic.
Old Town – Saturday 27 April, from 2.30 pm to the end of the event, establishment of a parking ban with forced removal on Piazza Matteotti in the stretch between the intersection of Via A. Turco and Via Carlo V, Corso Mazzini in the stretch between Piazza G. Garibaldi and Corso Mazzini up to Piazza Le Pera, including Piazza Basilica Immacolata, Piazza Grimaldi, Piazza Le Pera, Via Eroi and Via Jannoni from the intersection of Via Eroi to the intersection of Piazzale Trieste.
From 4.30 pm to the end of the event, vehicular traffic will be banned and a pedestrian area will be established on Corso Mazzini, in the stretch between Piazza G. Garibaldi and Corso Mazzini up to number 223.
Lido district – Sunday 28 April, from 2.30 pm to the end of the event, establishment of a parking ban with forced removal, on both sides, on Corso Progresso, Piazza A. Garibaldi, Via T. Gullì, Lungomare Stefano Pugliese, right side, in the stretch between the intersection with Via T. Gullì and the intersection of Via Torrazzo.
From 5.00 pm, a ban on transit will be established in the following streets: Via Torrazzo from the entrance to the Gaslini Park, SS 106, Corso Progresso, until the procession reaches the Lungomare Pugliese and the progressive closure in Via Gullì, Via Lungomare Pugliese until at the intersection with Via Torrazzo. Vehicle traffic coming from viale Crotone and heading towards Piazza A. Garibaldi will be diverted onto via Torrazzo.
