Increase in hacker attacks in Italy in 2023: data from the report

According to Clusit 2024 reportthe Italian Association for IT security, Italy is increasingly affected by cyber attacks.
Looking back over the past five years, more than 47% of total attacks occurred in 2023.

On average, every month they were detected 232 attackswith a maximum peak of 270 in April.
Clusit researchers have highlighted that

“it is a photograph that represents the trend lines of the phenomenon and which however represents only the tip of the iceberg, given that many victims still tend to keep information on the cyber attacks they suffer confidential and that in relation to some areas of the world the possibility of access to information is very limited.”

The main objectives were government and military sites, with an incidence of 19% (50% more than in 2022), followed by the manufacturing sector, the transport and logistics sector, the finance and insurance sectors.

A substantial portion of the hacker attacks were aimed at Public administrationoccupying 12%.

In Italy, attacks are increasing DDoS (36% of attacks in 2023), a value that exceeds the global figure by 28 percentage points, marking an annual percentage change on the total of 1486%.

As explained by the Clusit experts, the strong growth is

“probably due to the increase in incidents caused by hacktivism campaigns: very often the attack technique used in this case is DDoS, since the aim is to interrupt the service operation of the organization or institution identified as the victim”.
