“Forum for a territorial platform, let’s avoid a social collapse”

We receive and publish a speech by Antonio Macchia, general secretary of the CGIL Brindisi

Brindisi is facing an unprecedented industrial crisis, with the risk of sinking into an economic abyss from which it will be difficult to escape. The Messapian capital is grappling with a series of challenges that threaten the social fabric and the very future of the community.

Crises in key sectors such as energy, chemistry, engineering and aeronautics have thrown our people into a condition of extreme precariousness. Job losses, uncertainty about the future and growing absolute and relative poverty represent a wake-up call that cannot be ignored.

Faced with this dramatic scenario, CGIL Brindisi raises its voice and launches an urgent appeal to all stakeholders, from local and national institutions to businesses, social organizations and citizens, to unite to start a new constructive phase.

We can no longer afford to remain inert in the face of this emergency. An act of social responsibility on the part of everyone is necessary to avoid the economic collapse of Brindisi and build a sustainable future for our city.

The CGIL proposes to bring together all the actors involved around a common table to develop a concrete and shared action plan. A plan that includes immediate measures to address the employment crisis, industrial reconversion and development projects, and strategies to attract new investments.

But it’s not enough. We need more incisive and proactive action. For this reason, the CGIL launches the idea of a “Forum for a territorial platform”. A new tool for comparison and sharing which has as its objective the drafting of a Territorial Platform, a document of shared demands on which to concentrate the action of all stakeholders.

The territorial platform must be developed in an inclusive and transparent way, involving all the actors interested in the future of Brindisi. It must contain concrete and achievable proposals for the economic and social relaunch of the city, with particular attention to the reconversion of abandoned industrial sites and the development of new production sectors.

The “Forum for a territorial platform” represents a valid alternative to the failed “Brindisi Method”. The latter, although initially representing an opportunity to unite stakeholders, unfortunately foundered due to divisions linked in particular to the issue of the Edison terminal project.

It is essential to underline that, although there is a “No” on a single project – widely transversal and shared by dozens of associations, political parties and movements -, this does not mean that there are not multiple “Yes”s shared by all stakeholders. Yes to solving the decarbonization problem, yes to solving the chemistry problem, yes to addressing the challenges in all the other sectors mentioned.

Union and sharing common goals are the key to the future of Brindisi. The “Forum for a territorial platform” represents an opportunity to overcome the divisions of the past and build a shared path towards the relaunch of our city.

There is no time to lose. Poverty is advancing and the risk of economic collapse is real. We must act now, with a constructive spirit and determination, to save Brindisi and its future.

The CGIL invites all Brindisi to join this collective effort for the rebirth of our city. Together, we can build a better future for ourselves and future generations. Let’s focus on the issues that unite us and which are the vast majority and put aside those that divide us if we really want to change the fate of this area for the better.
