Treviso, the parents’ strike: “We no longer send our children to class. That companion is dangerous and too violent. And the school does nothing”

There is a violent student in the class of a primary school in Treviso, no one is able to contain him and for this reason the parents no longer send their children to lessons. As a sign of protest. As many as eight out of 12 students do not show up to class, to make teachers and school management understand that the limit is full.

The action taken causes a sensation, because it is a real tug of war, even interference in the management of school staff. The presence of a double teacher in the classroom is normally used in the creation of two “sub-classes”. The families of girls and boys at home in protest ask, however, that that second teacher be used to specifically follow the difficult student. “We ask for more safety for our children,” they say combatively, admitting that they are willing to move at all levels, even with the regional school office.

The classic straw that breaks the camel’s back dates back to Friday last week. The children all had to line up to leave the classroom, but one of them did not respect the instructions given by the teacher. It’s always the same and for this the teacher scolds him, without foreseeing his disorganized reaction. The child holds a scissors and throws it at her, she dodges it but the object hits the little girl behind her.

The wounds are not serious but the fact detonates a discontent that has been brewing for some time. “We decided not to send our children to school to remind the institutions of their educational role,” explained one of the families involved at the Treviso Tribune, “the measures implemented so far by the school to address the problem of safety in the classroom and the management of problematic subjects have proven insufficient. We also understand that in recent months the teacher has opened two procedures due to injury.”

Families don’t want to criminalize the child’s behavior, they rather blame the school system. The principal, in response, put up a wall. “For months we have been deploying all available resources to deal with this situation”, she highlighted Tribune. “School is a reflection of society, we cannot create a paradise where there is none. I find this protest pretentious, because in fact it denies these students’ right to study and attempts to put the school institution under pressure when there are other ways to intervene.”
