few nurses and deteriorated climate”

COSENZA The Chamber of Labor and the FP CGIL of Cosenza once again denounce «the serious critical issues found and reported by the nurses in the operating room of the Annunziata Hospital in Cosenza, due partly to a reduced nursing staff and partly to a deteriorated internal climate due to the organizational management, which is, to say the least, revisable, which it requires interventions immediate and urgent to avoid even more serious consequences». The Chamber of Labor and the FP, we read in a note, «since December, after a meeting with the workers of the Operating Block, had highlighted major problems which, despite being immediately reported to the Commissioner, Vitaliano De Salazarand to the highest authority in the field of sector personnel as well Director of the Sitra Department, Carla Catania, have not been resolved to date.” There shortage of nursing staffin recent months, claims the CGIL, «it got even worse, due to an increase in surgical activities without taking into account the number of nurses available; this situation “forced” 14 out of 27 instrumental nurses, against their will, to request a transfer to send a clear signal to the Commissioner, Vitaliano De Salazar, and to the Sitra Department Head, Carla Catania, and to denounce an unsustainable working situation and a climate deteriorated by continuous clashes on the part of those who manage them, thus putting the work of the professional and, above all, direct patient care. In this regard, – write the two union acronyms – we would like to recall the countless newspaper articles on operating theaters published in recent months, on infected rooms (flies in the operating theater and staff who enter inside without the correct dressing), on events adverse events (gauze forgotten in the abdomen and patient urgently re-operated which the Commissioner would have defined as a happenable and repeatable as well as normal event), the cause of which can be attributed to the lack of personnel”.
«It’s from a few days ago – continues the note – the news of the transfer of one of the 14 instrumental professionals, while others await to be mobilized in other operational units. The lack of staff leads to the recruitment of staff from outside the operating room, who, if they do not have adequate training, will not be able to guarantee the standards expected for the patient and colleagues on shift inside the rooms, consequently making the work of the operator worse. staff present and, above all, guaranteeing a lower level of quality and safety than that obtained with internal staff. A situation which, with the arrival of summer and holiday shifts, will become unsustainable. With a note dated 04/23/2024, signed by the FP Cgil, – it should be noted – clarifications were requested from both the Commissioner and Sitra on the criteria used in identifying the personnel subject to transfer in compliance with the regulation on internal mobility; we were also asked to implement everything necessary to protect the safety of personnel on duty. As the Chamber of Labor and FP Cgil we are strongly concerned about the stability of the entire healthcare system starting from the psychophysical integrity of workers who are once again called upon to deal with staff shortages in a management climate that does not go well with a critical environment such as that of operating rooms; we ask that their safety, the quality of services and the constitutionally guaranteed right to health be guaranteed for citizens. We ask for immediate solutions because in this situation it is not possible to ensure normal care activities. We hope for an improvement in the working conditions of employees and greater protection for hospitalized citizens. In particular, we underline – it is finally written – the need for decisive intervention by the competent authorities to put an end to the stalemate situation that has persisted for too long”.
