The historical artefact, over 3 km long, was studied and documented by the Underground Studies Center in 1997

In 1997, the Genoa Underground Studies Center was called to Puglia by a consortium of companies to explore, study, survey and document the underground aqueduct “Sant’Angelo – Fontane della Stella” of Gravina, in the province of Bari.

This historical artefact, consisting of an inspectable tunnel, partly excavated and partly built underground, has a planimetric development of over 3 km, with an overall height difference of 7 meters between the level of the intake and the divider.

The water, which was collected from the springs, reached the city thanks to the monumental viaduct of the Madonna della Stella, more commonly known as the Aqueduct Bridge.

The latter, rebuilt in 1722 by the Orsini family after part of the previous building collapsed following a strong earthquake, still represents an important historical and architectural testimony of the area today.

The Genoa Underground Studies Centre, specialized in research, exploration and documentation of underground environments, conducted a thorough investigation of the Gravina aqueduct, noting its construction and planimetric characteristics.

Thanks to the work of its experts, it was possible to reconstruct the history and evolution of this important artefact, which for centuries guaranteed the city’s water supply.

Recently, during an inspection in Puglia, some experts from the Centro Studi Sotterranei returned to visit these places rich in charm and history, recalling with pleasure the collaboration with local friends Vito Nicefalo and Michele Conca, as well as with the Puglia Grotte di Group. Castellana.

The activity of the Genoa Underground Studies Center represents an important contribution to the knowledge and valorisation of the underground historical and environmental heritage, often little known and valorised, but of fundamental importance for understanding the history and evolution of the territories.
