Driving towards a Safe Future: Road Education in Teramo

The important event “At the school of Road Education and Safety”, a week to raise awareness among young people about the prevention of road accidents, in view of the European Road Safety Day of 6 May 2024. The event, created by the school director Maria Letizia Fatigati and by the prof. Angelo Di Carlo (contact person for the Institute for road education), is organized byIIS “Alessandrini-Marino” of Teramo in collaboration with theAutomobile Club Teramo And the non-profit association “Di.Di. Differently Disabled” and with the participation of State Police – Teramo Traffic Police Section.

The initiative responds to the indications of the Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditara who recently declared that the guidelines on citizenship education are being approved, of which road safety education will constitute an important part.

After the presentation of the school director Maria Letizia Fatigati and the greetings of the authorities present, the training meeting relating to the “Don’t throw away your life in a second” project organized by the non-profit association “Di.Di. Differently Disabled”. They will speak:

Emiliano Malagoli – president of the non-profit organization “Di.Di.”, instructor of the Italian Motorcycle Federation, disabled motorcyclist, amputee of his right leg due to a motorbike accident when he was 36 years old; in a few months he returned to motorbikes, subsequently founding the non-profit organization “DI.Di.” to offer other disabled children the opportunity to get back on two wheels, for passion or personal mobility;

Chiara Valentini – technician of the Italian Motorcycle Federation, she competed at a competitive level, winning the European women’s title in 2006 and, together with Emiliano, in 2013 she founded the non-profit organization “Di.Di.”, of which she is secretary;

Omar Bortolacelli – 40-year-old of Emilian origins, works at the 118 call center in Bologna and has been in a wheelchair for 13 years due to an accident at work caused by one of his colleagues driving the ambulance; after rehabilitation, she decided to take his life into her own hands, starting to practice paralympic sports and taking care of the future of the children, going to schools to bring her experience (so far she has met more than 6,000 students throughout Italy);

Luca Zavatti – player in the Italian national amputee football team and first amputee coach in Italy, he obtained the UEFA level B coaching license, which allows him to coach up to series D as first coach and at the Allievi Nazionali at youth level.

The morning will end with testimonies from:

Iwan Piccioni who 16 years ago, forced into a wheelchair following a motorcycle accident, was not discouraged and became a good glider pilot, achieving prestigious results in acrobatic flying;

Francesco Minella – athlete of Deco Metalferro Amicacci Abruzzo, Italian wheelchair basketball champion team 2022/2023, who began his Paralympic journey following a car accident in 2000. So far he has won two European cups, the scudetto with Amicacci and last year he participated in the world championships with the national wheelchair basketball team.

The event on April 29th can be followed, even by students from other schools, in live streaming on the Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/iisteramo – the direction will be handled by the teachers of the Institute Septimius Steel And Alfredo Centinaro.

The demonstration will continue Thursday 2 May with training interventions relating to the Edustrada ACI projects “The effects of distracted driving” And “Micromobility and sustainable mobility” organized by the Teramo Automobile Club which, with this important initiative, concludes the cycle of meetings with school pupils. In 2024, the year of its centenary, ACI Teramo, at the initiative of the president Carmine Cellineseis committed to training more than 800 students from provincial schools.

The final event is scheduled Monday 6 May, European Road Safety Daywith the training intervention of Alfio Scuderi – Chief Superintendent of the State Police – Teramo Traffic Police Section.

The head teacher Fatigati underlines that <<it is essential to build and encourage in our students on a daily basis the culture of prevention, of a sense of danger and of respect for one’s own life and that of others, so that we can seriously think and hope for conscious, correct driving styles and the consequent reduction of the terrible road accidents which unfortunately occur in large numbers>>.
