PAVIA – Corripavia 2024 cancelled, the historic foot race in Pavia which last year recorded a record participation with almost 4 thousand athletes. The decision, painful and officially communicated in the last few hours by Franco Coronapresident of the organizing company Hundred Towerscomes after months of tensions with the Municipality of Pavia.
The choice was based on the lack of adequate organizational and financial support from the municipal administration. In the letter sent to the mayor Fabrizio Fracassi, Corona explains that the growing success of the event “has made it necessary to make a leap in structural and entrepreneurial quality, which can no longer rest solely on the shoulders of Cento Torri”. Corona’s hope is that the suspension is only “temporary” and that, “then the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Pavia in 2025, an agreement can be found between the different city entities to relaunch the Corripavia”. A discussion table in which, according to the president of Cento Torri, the new mayor, who will be elected in June, should also participate.
Among the reasons for Corona’s discontent, there is also the fine received by Cento Torri for having drawn the white and yellow stripes that delimited the race route without the necessary authorization. A sanction which, according to Corona, appears “paradoxical given that the signs have been used for twenty years without any problem”.
The cancellation of Corripavia 2024 represents a serious blow for the world of Pavia sport and for the city itself. The event, in addition to its sporting value, had become an important moment of aggregation and promotion of the territory. Now, the future of the event is uncertain and will depend on the will of the various city groups to find an agreement to relaunch it. The municipal elections in June could represent a turning point for the future of Corripavia. The new mayor will have the task of deciding whether and how to support the event, listening to the needs of the organizers and finding concrete solutions to guarantee its continuity.
