«My son kidnapped by his father»

PADUA – Chases, reports to the police and police interventions. They are nothing more than the direct consequences of the battle between a mother and father from Padua, to try to have theexclusive custody of their three and a half year old child. The terrain of the challenge, which began a month ago, is located between the municipalities of Padua and that of Rubano, where the contenders live.

The heaviest accusation, at the moment, is against the father: the mother has sued him for child abduction. «The premise is fundamental» began to tell mother Giulia, 39 years old and with two degrees: one in Pharmacy obtained at the University of Ferrara and the second in Biotechnology for health obtained in Rome. «There is no sentence from a judge – she continued – who entrusts the child to the father. In fact, the little boy bears my surname and the father didn’t even want to recognize him.” And again: «Another issue not to be underestimated in this mess is my past as a drug addict. I suffered from depression and anorexia, and I used cocaine. My son’s father makes this point, but in reality I haven’t used drugs for a long time. I am followed by social services and the Serd.”

THE FACTS

Six months after the birth of the child, the father, who previously did not want to recognize him, began to show up with the mother to see his son. At this juncture the social services, already supporting the mother, and after a series of meetings mum Giulia decided to entrust the baby to the dad for a couple of weekends a month. «I agreed to her – she took her back – and I never thought I would find myself in this situation. So on March 24th I accompanied my son to his father’s house. Then, having had a problem, I gave him permission to keep it until the 26th. The next day I went to get it and he didn’t give it to me. He told me that he would take custody of him and that he would change his nursery school. At that point I decided to call social services, who advised me to leave him with his father as long as he let me see him as often as I wanted.”
Mother Giulia follows the advice of her social worker and asks the child’s father to see him on the day of Easter to give him the egg. «He accepted – he recalled – but then with a video call on his cell phone he told me not to show up». So her mother, on Easter Sunday, went to the police station in via Rismondo and she told him reported for child abduction.

THE PURSUIT

The next day, it is Easter Monday, mother Giulia with the Easter egg for her child, showed up at her father’s house escorted by her partner and a friend. «And here all hell happened – she took her back – because he and her brother became violent. As soon as I had the baby in my arms, he grabbed me by the hair and the hood trying to slam my head on the hood of my friend’s car so he could leave the baby. Then he attacked my partner and pushed my friend to the ground. We managed to get back into the car with my son and drive away.”
The father called 113, while the brother was behind the wheel of a van afterwards the car with the three and the little one on board: “He was trying to cut us off” declared mother Giulia. The vehicle was then intercepted and stopped by three police patrols. The mother was accompanied to the police station and the child was handed back to his father. Four days later, on April 5, mother Giulia showed up for the second time at the carabinieri barracks in via Rismondo. «I reported him for violence, beatings and threats. I don’t understand why it was re-entrusted to him – she terminated it – considering that I no longer use cocaine, I am followed by social services and the Serd, and at the moment I am collaborating with a plastic surgeon’s office. In short, I work. My son has my last name and I haven’t seen him for about twenty days now. I know that he isn’t taken to nursery school and I don’t know who he spends his days with.” Mother Giulia, very combative, has every intention of getting her son back and for a couple of days she has been supported by the lawyer Angelo Merlin of the Padua Bar.
