The Government does not challenge the “Bear Killing Law” of Trentino, animal rights activists are worried.
The animal rights and environmental associations ENPA, LAC, LAV, LEAL, LEIDAA, LIPU, LNDC, Pro Natura and OIPA at the beginning of April wrote to the Prime Minister and the Ministers of the Environment and Regional Affairs asking for urgent intervention to stop the law of the Autonomous Province of Trento, chaired by Maurizio Fugatti, which allows the killing of up to eight bears considered “problematic” per year.
Now news has arrived that the Government did not want to challenge the provision, despite the numerous aspects of illegitimacy that conflict with national and community legislation highlighted by the associations in their letter.
“The failure to challenge the ‘bear killing law’ is another act that confirms the frontal attack launched on wild animals and the environment by the new Executive since its inauguration”, comment the associations. It is now impossible to keep track of the many acts that are demolishing, one piece at a time, the few regulations protecting wild animals, while acts in favor of the hunting lobby are on the agenda”, declare the associations.
This is a political drift – say the animal rights associations – which comes into thunderous conflict with article 9 of the Constitution, which since February 2022 has included the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems, of which they are part, among the fundamental principles of our Republic. also the Trentino bears.
“We cannot tolerate this new threat to the lives of Trentino bears. As soon as the Fugatti Council decides to kill a single bear, we will ask the TAR to raise the question of the constitutional legitimacy of the bear killing law in relation to Article 9 of the Constitution”, conclude the associations.
