ANCONA Second place for the Italian junior artistic gymnastics team at the European championships in Rimini, with Tommaso Brugnami, 17 years old, from Borghetto di Monte San Vito, standard bearer of the Ancona Youth Gymnastics, protagonist, like a true captain. A silver that confirms the strength and solidity of the Italian team, which won the title in Munich two years ago, even if the regret remains for a success that was just a hair’s breadth, and for a mere trifle.

Overtaking

England grabbed the victory right at the last tool by 0.028 of a point. However, the performance of the young Italian gymnasts deserves applause and the performance of Brugnami is of great depth, as he, as a true captain of the team, dragged his teammates Manuel Berettera, Diego Vazzola, Pietro Mazzola and Simone Speranza to a well-deserved silver which confirms the strength and technique of a truly exceptional group. Tommaso Brugnami was satisfied with his performance, even though he missed out on a continental encore at the last moment. «Now the apparatus finals await me on Saturday, and the all-round final on Sunday. I will do everything to be up to the task in this case too.”

And because Tommy was not satisfied with winning the team medal but, with high-level performances, he qualified for three apparatus finals (rings, vault and floor exercise) obtaining the best performance, and therefore in pole position to obtain more medals, and is also second in Sunday’s all-around final from second place. The boys led by the head of the national youth team Nicola Costa, supported by the coaches Fabrizio Marcotullio (who is Brugnami’s coach at the Ancona Youth Gymnastics), Corrado Corti and Pietro Matias Bani, really gave everything, precisely so as not to have any regrets.

The challenges

In their group they had overtaken France in the last rotation, on floor exercise, where Brugnami himself provided a stunning performance. Then England struck the decisive blow, freezing the Italian team. Huge cheering at Casa Italia for the Italian team, with chants, photos and congratulations. Supporting Brugnami were friends and relatives but also his classmates and professors from the 4th scientific high school of Jesi. The Super Tommy fan club arrived from the Marche region, with a celebratory shirt depicting “Piumino”, or Tommaso, in Superman version. Congratulations also from Yuri Chechi and the athletes of the senior team.
