The sentences were issued by court of Monza on Wednesday 24 April by the judging panel in the late afternoon after the final speech of one of the lawyers and the meeting of the judging panel. Vittorio Romano Bartolini will have to serve 8 years in prison (the prosecutor had requested 9 years and 10 months), Giuseppe Bartolini 6 years (the request was 8 years), Luca Bertazzini 4 years and 6 months (8 had been requested), Riccardo Toscani 4 years and 6 months (7 had been requested), Salvatore Giugni 4 years (the prosecutor had proposed 7 years) and Angelo Sandro Interdonato 3 years and 8 months (while the prosecution had asked for 7 years). The six managers were also sentenced to compensate 5 thousand euros to the former workers for moral damage and also damages with a provisional amount of 5 million euros.

Bames case: the satisfaction of former workers

There is great satisfaction on our part, mine and the entire Committee of former Bames and Sem employees – said the former secretary of the Fim Cisl of Monza and Brianza Gigi Redaelli -. This sentence, although first degree, repays all the efforts made to keep attention high on this complicated matter. Let’s enjoy this moment.”On the other hand, the former employees had been waiting for this pronouncement from afar October 2013, when the company in via Kennedy in the hamlet of Velasca it failed. The provisions of the sentence should also be recovered next week, while the reasons for the sentence will have to wait 90 days.

Bames case: Bertazzini is already thinking about the appeal

On the opposite front there are those who are already ready to act appealed like Dr. Bertazzini, former president and CEO of Bames between 2006 and 2008. “The ruling demonstrates that in the vast majority of cases the investments made were not wasteful in finding and encouraging third-party companies to replace Celestica which had moved to the Far East – said Bertazzini -. There is a residual part of the money spent which in my opinion was wrongly considered not instrumental to the action we were taking to protect workers. The sanction I suffer is certainly heavy and I want to demonstrate the inconsistency of the accusations on appeal to the judges. I remember that when I took on the role of president and CEO at the end of 2006 the company had a loss of 56 million euros and within a couple of years we had assets of over a million”.The fact remains that it took them 11 years before the Monza court made at least an initial decision on the Bames case amidst interruptions, postponements of hearings and also Covid which slowed down the legal process. However, the judicial question is not yet closed and Bertazzini’s choice of appeal could also be shared by the other five defendants.
