Mayor Campus on April 25: “In the past I succumbed to exploitation”
Mea culpa from the mayor of Sassari, Nanni Campus, during the celebrations of April 25th for the expulsion of Nazi-fascism. On stage besides the mayor, the prefect spoke Grazia La Faucithe president of Anpi Sassari, Thomas Arras and the two young people who participated in the project “Auschwitz reminder“. An initiative promoted by Arch and association Deina with the financial support of the Municipality of Sassari. The mayor’s speech was released to the press in a press release.
The Campus intervention
“Today, at the end of my second mandate, for the last time I have the honor of representing our City for you and with you in the celebration of Liberation Day – this is how the mayor began -. An anniversary that is the celebration of Freedom for everyone. Freedom as an absolute, precious good. Freedom as a gift that has come to us today through the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers and civilians: Catholics, communists, monarchists, Jews who fought and died to conquer it, united in the struggle for liberation fromGerman occupation and from fascist dictatorship. Dead that we must honor because it is from their sacrifice that our democracy was born.”
In his speech he recalled that these celebrations of freedom and democracy for the third year come during the war in Europe to which has been added the bloodshed between Israel and Palestine. “
It is in the face of these tragedies that we must feel the meaning of this celebration even more – admitted Nanni Campus -. For too many years, April 25th has been the cause of divisionsOf exploitations biased. In the past I too have succumbed to exploitation, making a spectacular mistake, but, after years, the time is certainly ripe for us to move away from the partisan confrontation between winners and losers, now entrusted to history, to all feel without distinction as winners of freedom and democracy, of a precious legacy that the war of liberation has left us. Freedom and democracy that we all, without distinction, feel we must love, respect and defend. Happy April 25th and have a good life everyone“.
