New autovolex on the Lecce highway

Now, 12 months later, the concrete hypothesis returns that the detectors may already be operational.

And this is nothing new for the municipality on the outskirts of Lecce: a speed camera was installed and activated in June 2022 with the aim, as repeatedly reiterated by the Trio administration, of slowing down the speed of the cars that speed along the state road every day, scene of numerous serious accidents in recent years. Seven months of operation which had produced 6,897 high minutes and a total collection of 606,535.39 euros. As documented by the reports sent by the local police to the Department for Internal and Territorial Affairs of the Ministry of the Interior, the total proceeds of the sanctions deriving from the verification of violations of the maximum speed limits, referring to article 142 of the Highway Code, amount to to 309,580.00 in 2022 and 296,955.39 euros in 2023. Proceeds, as attested by the same documentation, used to increase road safety through investments in signs, as well as covering the costs of managing the speed camera and paying the staff.

«It is our intention to activate tender procedures for the reinstallation of speed detectors along the Brindisi-Lecce state road in the coming weeks, with the aim of awarding the contract before the summer season – claimed Trio -. We believe that reducing speed and respecting the relevant limits is a necessary act to guarantee adequate levels of safety along our roads. I do not agree with the usual cliché according to which municipalities only pursue the aim of making money with this instrumentation, because if on the one hand it is undoubted that an increase in municipal revenues will be achieved, on the other hand it is equally obvious that thanks to these systems of detection ensures compliance or violation of rules designed to guarantee and safety for everyone. This last aspect is regularly ignored in debates relating to the topic, but, in my opinion, it should constitute the main element of discussion. So – concluded the mayor – I ask myself: why all this controversy regarding respect for the law?”.

Along the artery, in fact, the limit not to be exceeded is 110 km/h and anyone who does not pay attention, has a heavy foot on the accelerator or does not notice, slows down too late, is destined to receive the “postcard” at home to immortalize the infringement, photographing the vehicles that will speed by at a higher speed. The systems will however be signaled by appropriate road signs, installed at a distance of approximately five hundred meters from the speed detectors, as well as being placed on the exact spot. They will inform motorists of the presence of the device, in a stretch that becomes even more lively in summer, with the many, many tourists who choose to spend their holidays in Salento and reach it by car.
