Minister Salvini re-announces the Rome-Latina motorway on TV but changes his version on the toll

The Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini re-announces the works ofRome-Latina motorwayon the route of the current 148 Pontina.

«The Roma-Latina that we’re talking about, the Pontina, I don’t know for how many decades: my belief is that the project can be started».

During the Porta a Porta television program broadcast last night on Rai 1, Salvini listed a series of projects that are part of the plan “for roads, motorways and railways for the next ten years” which “reaches 200 billion”.

It’s “Italians’ money, so every euro cent is an enormous responsibility, it’s certainly a lot of money to spend, not to throw away.”

Roma-Latina will be paid again?

As for the Roma-Latina, however, Minister Salvini has changed his version compared to the last time, when it was announced that the road would not be tolled. The commissioner appointed by the Government, Antonio Mallamo, said this, without however talking about planning.

It seemed clear that a public company would do the work: evidently this will not be the case.

«Now we are moving forward with the design, it will probably be a private individual on the Pedemontana Veneta model who will do the work», added Salvini.

Only a month ago the president of the Region Francesco Rocca he had admitted that all the funds were still missing for Latin Rome.

«We are looking for resources for the Rome-Latina, what I call the Salerno-Reggio Calabria of our region.

We can start with the first 13 kilometers but there are still 300 million to go. But I am sure that those resources will also arrive, also thanks to the dialogue started with Salvini”, declared the governor of Lazio while speaking at the general assembly of Unindustria at the Nuvola dell’Eur.

The original project

According to the announced project, photovoltaic systems will be built to make the use of the future Rome-Latina motorway free for residents of the Lazio region.

There will be a saving of 55 thousand m2 of land by eliminating toll collection barriers in the 11 junctions planned from Tor de’ Cenci to Latina Nord, passing through Pomezia, Ardea and Aprilia, for a total motorway axis of 51km.

Overall, engineer Mallamo spoke of a cost cut of around 350-400 million euros.

SuperPontina or Roma-Latina?

Commuters on the 148 are skeptical about the possibility of actually starting a project.

Lining up in kilometre-long queues almost every day they saw pharaonic projects passing before their eyes, grandiose ideas to solve the problem of connecting the two main cities of Lazio.

Tyrrhenian Corridor, SuperPontina, Rome-Latina Motorway… many have heard, but the 148 Pontina is still there, with all its problems and its queues.

In the meantime, however, between project costs and continuous legal cases, several hundred million euros have already been lost. No one knows a precise estimate.
